What technical writing is and how to seize the opportunity ๐งต ๐
First, let's understand what is the difference between ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ช๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด and other types of writing:
General ๐ช๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด tends to be more on the self-indulgent side where you (the person communicating) care less about the person on the other side of your communication.
With ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ช๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด, there is almost zero self-indulgence and entertainment. 100% focus on the end user. You are there to help the user in the time of need. Everybody comes to read the docs to ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ป, not to get entertained.
Everyone wants to get through the learning process as quickly and as painlessly as possible and be at same time efficient as possible.
And you, the technical writer, is making sure of that.
๐๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐น๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ช๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, looking to transition into #Web3, do these 3 things: ๐
1) Adopt a developer mindset. Stop thinking you can't code and build a simple app. It's a lot easier in Web3 than it is in your current prop-tech company.
2) Learn to work with the community and do PRs (pull requests on Github). This means not flat out going to overwrite somebody's text (as you are used to) but guiding them to the final piece with your comments.
3) Start contributing to the docs of Web3 projects (80% of them are live on GitHub). They ๐ธ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ appreciate it, and it's the easiest and the most positive way for you to build your portfolio while also learning Web3. It's a win-win-win all around.
๐๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ช๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด & want to succeed in web3, we have good news for you!
You don't have the weight of the proprietary web2 tech writing culture on your shoulders. And that's a great start!
Do these 5 things to succeed: ๐
1) Search for any ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฒ with decent reviews. (They are not expensive). The course will not make you a tech writer, but it will show you all the directions in which you need to learn and practice.
2) Search for "๐ฑ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐๐๐น๐ฒ ๐ด๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐" of your favorite Web2 or Web3 company. Start adopting the style guides in your writing.
4) Learn the basics of ๐ด๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต๐๐ฏ. Start by learning about ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ถ๐๐, ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ and ๐ฝ๐๐น๐น ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐๐๐.
5) Contribute to Web3. Now that you are armed with understanding tech writing and style guides, go and contribute to Web3 projects to learn, practice, and build your portfolio.
Again, it's a win-win-win for all the parties involved.
You are doing a great thing. ๐
