The US banned Hawaiian language, poisos our water, devastated our universal healthcare, overthrew our country, & illegally occupies Hawaii to this day. My mother's hands were broken for speaking Hawaiian in school. The US is not a beacon, but the destroyer of independence. #July4
The US military poisoned our Hawaiian water supply, still hasn't cleaned the jet fuel in our aquifer or shut down it's tanks, and all of Oahu's water supply could soon become unusable due to petroleum & salt contamination. ImageImageImageImage
The US military won't acknowledge or clean its catastrophic gas spill in Hawaii, because the US is illegally occupying Hawaii as a platform to plunder China, bomb Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan. The US own troops and Hawaiian 'natives' are expendable pawns.
Native Hawaiians / PI have the HIGHEST rate of incarceration in the US, and the lowest healthy life expectancy. Settler colonialism is ongoing. Still clearing the land of us for your resorts, and forced-laboring us to make your maitai umbrellas for 25 cents/hour in prison. ImageImage

As an Native Hawaiian, Shinzo Abe's politics, including suppression of indigenous Ainu & Okinawan peoples & denial of Japan's genocides was unacceptable. Sovereign Hawaii had full citizenship & equality for all races, and was / is majority Asian + Pacific Islander. Image
After the US invasion, ban on Hawaiian language and culture, the situation for all races in Hawaii fell. Asian workers in the 1900s staged labor strikes to improve their pay & work conditions. Our US-coup'ed Hawaiian leader, Liliuokalani, supported the struggles of the workers. ImageImage
The sovereign country of also Hawaii had Black citizens before the US Civil War. In fact, US slaves that stepped onto Hawaiian soil were considered free. Asians were full citizens in Hawaii as US chained them up to build railroads & West Coast, & were lynched at whim by whites. Image

As Elliot Page controversy stirs, remember trans, non-binary and gender-fluid people are accepted in Hawaiian culture (i.e. mahu), & play vital roles in our resistance against colonization & US genocide of Hawaiians. Binary gender is a Western, imperial concept, forced on us.

I often alter my own presentation. I'm in support of LGBTQ+ rights generally, but this is also about self-decolonization & reclamation of gender-fluid Hawaiian culture that was stolen from me. Hawaiian language was banned by the US, when I was born.

Diseases like small-pox have been weaponized by colonizers to eliminate Native Americans. They tried the same on Native Hawaiians, but we used contact-tracing, lockdowns, vaccines & universal healthcare (which we invented) to prevent biological warfare from wiping out our people.
The million deaths in the US were never inevitable, and some countries have replicated 1800's Hawaii's successes in containing disease today.
The pandemic is still here, and it is still killing, disabling and causing far more permanent damage to children and adults than most realize. Those that follow actual science know this.

The fact we've 30,000+ Hawaiians speakers now is testament to our struggle to preserve our culture from eradication.
Hawaii also leads the US in the school-to-prison pipeline - #1 in rounding up children, especially Native Hawaiians. Part of the continued US attempt to destroy us indigenous people and lifeways.
Since US invaded our sovereign country, Hawaii also tops the US in police killings, disproportionately Pacific Islander, and Hawaii is by far #1 most economically unequal. (I worked with homeless/at-risk kids in that tent city in Honolulu).
