#Opinion: Mike Grier is the first Black general manager in the history of the National Hockey League.

Progress has always moved slowly in the backrooms occupied by hockey’s power brokers, but this was better late than never, writes @dfeschuk

Grier defied the odds as a ninth-round draft pick to play more than 1,000 games in the league during his days as a rugged forward in Edmonton, Washington, Buffalo and San Jose.

He acknowledged the significance of his rise to the top of the executive ranks

Grier may be the first Black general manager in the NHL, but he isn’t even the first general manager in his family.

That would be his older brother, Chris, the general manager of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins since 2016, writes @dfeschuk

Mike and Chris are the sons of Buddy Grier, a former NFL running back who coached with the New England Patriots before taking a series of scouting and executive roles in New England, Houston and Miami, writes @dfeschuk

“My job is to do the best I can for the San Jose Sharks organization, and if I do that, hopefully it opens the door to give other opportunities to other minorities to get in front-office positions,” Grier said.

Last year, senior members of Freshii — including founder Matthew Corrin — quietly began testing a software called “Percy,” a video-calling device attached to cash registers at select franchise locations.

Now, the chain’s founder wants to go global. torstar.co/zlaw50JRtPN
The software was built to connect Freshii patrons with cheap, outsourced workers based in countries thousands of kilometres away to help franchise owners cut down on labour costs while keeping their doors open in case local staff called in sick.

But Percy sparked intense criticism after the Star revealed that some of those “virtual cashiers,” based in countries such as Nicaragua, are paid $3.75 (U.S.) an hour to perform the same tasks as Ontario workers who earn a minimum wage of $15 (CAD) an hour

There are Ontarians whose license suspensions for alcohol abuse lasted longer than the suspensions of many people actually convicted of driving drunk.

This is part three of #Suspended:
thestar.com/news/investiga…
A Toronto Star and @UofT_ijb investigation has found these drivers are among dozens of Ontarians whose licences were suspended by the province for alcohol-related medical conditions that a provincial appeal body later found did not threaten road safety.

“It’s ridiculous,” said Alan Pearse, a lawyer in Toronto whose practice is devoted exclusively to representing clients charged with offences related to impaired driving.

“They’re serving more time than a drunk driver.”
