3rd 7/7 #ResignationGate Thread…

BBC: Midday News. 30 minutes to go till @BorisJohnson “resigns” officially, but Boris is often late, so who knows.
Just before the credits rolled we learned that Buckingham Palace hasn’t said whether the Queen has heard from the PM.
Importantly - @ChrisMason just reminded me, he’s just resigning as Tory Party Leader, not as PM.

I expect I forgot this because it’s bonkers.
Certainly unprecedented, and perhaps unconstitutional in terms of the Tory Party constitution. And at best “cute” wrt the actual constitutional conventions which underpin the UK constitutional order. Also who’s going to be the Tory Party Leader?
🇬🇧 politics has been weird since the Brexit referendum. But what is happening now is an order of magnitude stranger than anything we have seen before.
Meanwhile over at @SkyNews@theresa_may is now delivering a speech to the Institute of Government about following the rules, and observing the rule of law. “Adherence to convention is important.”
“But our system only works when the conventions are observed.”

A timely remark. Meanwhile @BorisJohnson is setting up his podium.
Conservative MP’s are gathering…
As are @BorisJohnson’s staff.
Sky’s @BethRigby is pointing out that there’s not many MP’s here out of a caucus of 358.
It’s very Trumpian….
He begins with the facts…

That he is being removed.

… then asserts some speculation… that he is going to stay as PM until a new Leader is appointed.

And now he’s delivering a political speech.
“Our Brilliant and Darwinian system will choose a new leader…. And to that new leader I will give as much support as I can.”

Polls are actually: Cons 35. Lab. 41. LD 11. And his personal polls are completely awful.
He claimed before the Conservatives are only a bit behind.
A short and at times incoherent speech by someone pretending he is still the Prime Minister.
But this is not over yet. Boris as Trump often does, is seeking here to get out ahead and assert what the reality is, but it’s not yet clear what the transition will be.
All that has really happened at this point is that there is no longer a Tory Party leader.

4th 7/7 #ResignationGate Thread…

After @BorisJohnson's resignation there were smiles all around. @BethRigby even eulogised him. His concession to "Political Gravity" was welcomed - but its not clear that everyone understands the full implications of that gravity.
@BorisJohnson @BethRigby For starters @BorisJohnson was far from contrite, no apology, no mention of why he was booted. Instead he criticised his caucus, accusing them of succumbing to "herd" instinct.
@BorisJohnson @BethRigby We are now being told by worthies that there is no provision in the @Conservatives Constitution for caretakers - even though this idea seemed to be top of mind hours earlier.

2nd 7/7 #ResignationGate Thread.... #RatsInASack edition.

Breaking @BethRigby: @BorisJohnson is making appointments to his Cabinet

First up apparently a replacement for "the snake" @MichaelGove, for whom a name has been given - @GregClarkMP a remainer.
@BethRigby @BorisJohnson @michaelgove @GregClarkMP Again. If this farce continues. If the @Conservatives Caucus is unable to achieve any coherence. Then this Govt. will fall.
"He needs to go. He can't cling on. It's obvious he is unfit to be Prime Minister.... I do not think anything will unite the Tory Party they are tearing themselves apart. If they do not remove him we will bring a vote of confidence....."

That's now nearly half the Govt. that has resigned now. What other nuttiness will @BorisJohnson add to the mix over the next few hours.
The @Conservatives Minister for the Cabinet officer is answering an urgent question. He says that "It is true that the PM [@BorisJohnson] will shortly make an important statement."

He says that the Govt. is still functioning, not withstanding that half of it has now resigned.
@Conservatives @BorisJohnson The @UKLabour deputy leader @AngelaRayner "Britain has no functioning govt." .... and much much more. This is a significant issue.

I think it is fair to say that the United Kingdom is today facing a constitutional crisis.

Delusional is definitely the word for this latest wrinkle in this most undignified exit. It's hard to say this but I will welcome @DominicRaab as a caretaker PM.

Boris Johnson to resign as Tory leader but hopes to stay on as PM theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
I have changed my mind on @DominicRaab... yes he would be better than Boris, but he's not up to the job and the UK is a) at war and b) facing an economic crisis, the worst since the 1980s.

These are @BorisJohnson 's current polling numbers >> yougov.co.uk/topics/politic…

They are truly awful. Voters have turned against him. The politics of removing Boris are not ambiguous.
@BorisJohnson The latest news via @grantshapps is that Boris has proposed some kind of timetable to depart. As has the 1922 commitee. Monday.

When before the Liason Cmtte. He was clearly unwilling to give up on the only leverage he has left (or thinks he has left)....
@BorisJohnson @grantshapps ... namely the ability to dissolve Parliament, and call an election. Whilst Sir Bernard Jenkins thought he had got Boris to agree that he would not do so. What he actually got was an agreement not to do so if he lost a vote of confidence.

#BorisJohnsonTheFinalChpater Latest update thread:

Latest news is that @BorisJohnson appears to have sneaked in the back door of Downing Street to meet with his Ministers, who are expected to tell him to resign.
11 minutes from the BBC's 6pm news bulletin. Huw Edwards (@thehuwedwards) is live outside Downing St. As we lead in to prime time TV, both Sky and BBC are replaying the opening gambit in all this, a disastrous question time in Westminster. And @sajidjavid's devastating speech.
