A malfunctioning gearbox/transmission, as opposed to a broken brake light, could strand you & your vehicle on the side of the road in the middle of the night or on a long trip
So, how can you know if a gearbox needs repair or replacement?
1. FLUID LEAKAGE
To reduce friction & overheating, Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is incorporated in automatic gears. If this fluid starts to leak it'll contribute to gearbox failure, in fact
ATF leaks are normally a bright red fluid found under the engine in a leaking car
2. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
This can signal a number of issues & can also indicate a gearbox problem.
Do not dismiss this warning, your car is equipped with a number of sensors that are intended to identify issues, ideally before they worsen.Check levels of your coolant & transmission
3. POOR GEAR RESPONSE
If you're experiencing problems changing gears, your car's gearbox may be damaged. Any hesitation or refusal to change gears could be a sign that your gearbox is faulty.
These signs of a gearbox problem could be electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical
4. UNUSUAL. NOISES
This may be a sign that your gearbox is damaged. If your gearbox starts making a noise you've never heard before, or if you hear clunking, whining or humming you might have a problem
There're hundreds of moving parts in your gearbox & this can signal an issue
5. SHAKING, JERKING OR GRINDING.
Gearbox bearing failure is exhibited by a shake, jerk, or grind esp when changing gears, automatic gearbox problems may involve delay, slippage, or shaking.
Manual gearbox malfunctions are more likely to "grind."
6. BURNING ODOUR
If you detect a burnt rubber odour along with fluid leaks, you may be experiencing transmission problems
Smoke might also be visible. Burnt fluid indicates inadequate lubrication in the transmission
These symptoms can indicate your gearbox is nearing its end
The Gearbox is part of your car's 3 most important parts called the Drivetrain
1.Engine
2.Gearbox
3.Driveshaft
Take care of these parts & your car will not fail

During the festive ssn, the number of cars on the road multiplies. Most drivers are proficient but accidents can & do happen
Here are a few things to keep in mind after an unfortunate incident.
Before you get on the road, here are a few things to checkoff
1.Ensure everyone is buckled up
2.Ensure the car is in good condition
3.If you can, get an accident cover
4.Avoid overspeeding 5. Eat light & wear comfortable 6. Take breaks every 4-5 hrs 7. Obey all traffic rules
WHAT TO LEGALLY DO AFTER
No matter the severity, there're several things that you need to do:
1. Do not admit fault under any circumstance 2. Call insurance ASAP 3. Get a working phone no. for the other party 4. PHOTOS of the scene without moving the cars from all angles...
For motorists, a breakdown on an unfamiliar road, at night & in poor weather is one of the worst of all nightmares
A time we desperately try to remember where we put the contact No. for the breakdown or insurance, usually unsuccessfully
TOWING BASICS
Once upon a time, all new & used vehicles were made to be towed easily
But now that we buy complicated transmission cars that are auto, CVT & even electric, the towing situation has got a whole lot more complicated & as such certain cars can only be "flatbeded"
MOTOR INSURANCE
I'm the biggest advocate of comprehensive Ins. not only coz it has saved my ass countless times I know with the right guys it works hella well...
Having an additional flatbed insurance for your expensive car is not a luxury but a necessity if it can't be towed.
Got asked a very interesting question in the DM & thought I'd share with its answer...
"Hey Saruni, I've observed people don't stay with STi's for too long while those with Mark X keep them for longer... What's your take?"
1st things 1st...
WICKED OBSERVATION & you're spot on
ANSWER:
4 MAIN REASONS
4. TOYOTA & SUBARU Resale issues... Don't need to expound
3. LUXURY vs COMPACT. The Mark X has awesome leg room & luxury finishes while the STi (trying to save on weight) has a cramped, bare & zero comforts interior
2. GENTLEMAN vs BOYRACER. All boys aspire to be Groomed Respectful Gentlemen after a rebellious phase...
