On this Friday afternoon I have something to show you folks regarding my "Last Tweet in AWS" threading Twitter client.

Of course this is a thread, and of course I'm using the client to do it.
Last week I went to @Monitorama and attempted to livetweet while also providing alt-text for images. It was frankly a disaster; talks move way too fast for me to be able to competently do that–but I also wasn't willing to pull a "eh, that's hard, screw accessibility."
Note the new checkbox at the bottom of the image. That's right, by default it will auto-populate on image upload with alt-text powered by Machine Learning®.

Specifically, @Azure's Computer Vision API. It's the best of the ones I've sampled so far. The Last Tweet in AWS clien...
It is very much *not perfect*. But it is a start. It likely won't work super well for pictures of slides, but then again it may surprise me. We'll find out next week at the #AWSsummit in NYC I suppose.
For simple things it works well; it's *surprisingly* fast. Credit to @Azure's ML teams on this one. a green shoe on a blue surface
Other times it gets it very wrong to the point of uselessness, such as with this picture of a credit card from famous credit card company @GoldmanSachs. text, letter
Ideally it'd be able to take it a step beyond. "Oh, this is a wall of text; I'll OCR it and provide that instead" would be a huge boon. I think I'd have to build that capability out myself...
I will say that if I can get this far just by dicking around for an hour (plus a bit of front-end help from the ever-awesome @robgalanakis!), I don't believe that @Twitter has much of an excuse for not building a way better version of this into their native apps. :-/
...I just realized I didn't drop the lasttweetinaws.com link here. This thing is on the internet, available for anyone to use! If it's helpful to you, please let me know.

With the general availability of M1 Mac instances on EC2 as of today, I want to clear up some confusion I've seen about running macOS on EC2.

Thread time!
You need to reserve a "Dedicated Host" before you can launch a macOS AMI. Once reserved, you cannot unreserve it for 24 hours. This is an Apple license restriction that @awscloud cannot avoid.
The Intel Macs thus cost a minimum of $26 to instantiate, and will cost that much per day.

"Wait, does that mean it's a rip-off since a few months of that easily pays for the Mac itself?"

NAY!

I would like to extend my hearty congratulations to the @awscloud SageMaker Canvas team. There've been many attempts, but you're the first group in *years* to successfully hit me with a surprise AWS bill I wasn't expecting.

A thread...
I spun up a SageMaker Canvas tire-kicking exercise late last December, for 45 minutes. It was fun, still early days, and not quite for me. I shut it down--or so I thought.
It turns out that no, in fact that's not how it works. When logged into SageMaker Canvas, the user must click the "Logout" button.

This is, to my knowledge, the only @awscloud service that requires an explicit logout in order to stop billing you.

Have you ever complained about the slow piece of crap that is your macOS terminal? Of course not, because that would be unhinged.

"But it's written in Rust!"

Oh nevermind then; have $23 million in VC funding.

A thread...
There may be nuance and context that I'm missing here, but that's not going to clean the coffee that I just sprayed all over my monitor when I first came across this thing. It's time to kick the tires on @warpdotdev...
I'm greeted by a mandatory sign-in and non-optional telemetry.

From my terminal.

Hard for me to think of more ways for this to go wrong, but I am here for YOU, THE PEOPLE. A requirement to sign in and agree to "telemetry"

I periodically talk about my "Last Tweet in AWS" twitter client. I realize in some ways I've been using it as a crutch.

Given the impetus via @thingskatedid, there's a new feature. A screenshot of this very tweet being composed in the Last T
I often forget alt text, because I am human and fallible. Well, when shitpost threading, LastTweetinAWS.com now offers the option to require alt text before it'll let you send a tweet.
I wish the Twitter native clients offered this. I also really wish the Twitter API would let you add alt text after you've tweeted an image. I would no joke pay someone far better at alt text descriptions to do exactly that for me.

My calendar tells me it's time to annoy @awscloud on Twitter. This thread will now reference phrases drawn entirely from job postings on their formal amazon dot jobs site.
It's almost too easy, but we begin with the (as per Google) 262 results that feature the phrase "leadership principals." Yes, that's a typo. No, it is not mine.
"Customers don't adopt AWS if they can't understand what is costing them money."

OH HO HO CITATION FREAKING NEEDED!
