So yesterday I went to my alma mater (alu mater) Jadavpur University. Some of it has remained exactly the same, even after 23 years and some…well… thread follows.
First there are the funnies. No one other than Elon Musk can enter. And “torn off” might refer to the power supply or the paper itself.
The cybersecurity protocols are “interesting” and an empty classroom has the proper HTML code.
Massive hammocks collecting dirt represent the filtering out of bad ideas in the pursuit of education.
The Marxist rhetoric has become much more pronounced. Though I am not sure what the relationship between “smash patriarchy” and “free Kurds” has.
Aggressive rhetoric against “Brahminism” and ABVP.
The best graffiti by far, providing the counterpoint.

Translation: “fucked up life and too many intellectuals”

The JU I know.
Then that which I didn’t expect. A full Trinamool office in JU.
And then the shocker. Right outside the Computer science building, blatantly religious posters from Islamic Youth Federation.

Cannot imagine this in JU when I was there, religion was absolutely out of bounds.

One of the things I have been told is that Hinduphobia is imaginary. Bad things may happen to Hindus but it is not because they are Hindus, it is because they are Awami supporters (Bangladesh), poor (Pakistan) & brown (USA, Europe).

But tell me what is this? (Thread follows)
Marvel has become uber-woke in its post-endgame phase. Heroes from Asia (Shang-chi), heroes from Pakistan (Kamala Khan) but from one of the largest countries in the world and a major religion?

The Darkhold book, the ultimate book of multiverse evil, is written in Sanskrit. Image

If everything was not this woke, I would have said why not, but if every culture and religion is to be respected and represented, why isn’t there a Hindu-Indian hero (there are a lot of us) and even if there isn’t, why is the book of evil in our holy tongue?

Let’s handle this straight up. Why did you say KKR would come last? Besides the obvious reverse jinx (I am a fan), I did say KKR had a strong Indian batting core. My problem was with Starc (whether he would even show up or last the season) and blowing it up on one person rather than investing in backups, given how Narine and Russell have performed last few seasons.

Which brings me to the first big change this season which no one could have foreseen. Russell stayed fit and even though he never had to bat in a chase (which will bring us to point 2: Narine) his bowling was stellar. He took 19 wickets (a few wickets less than Bumrah), by far his best performance ever. In comparison, he took 7 wickets last year. Who could have predicted this?

Now Narine.
Narine had his best batting IPL ever. He made 488 runs. Last year he made 7, year before 22. Narine is a batsman who is critically dependent on the other opener. His best batting was when he partnered with Chris Lynn. What made Lynn ideal was right hand bat, good against pace, leaving Narine to face spin, and Lynn didn’t lose rhythm if Narine got stuck (Narine doesn’t take singles to rotate strike)

Because of Roy pulling out, KKR rectified the biggest problem they had: absence of a keeper (this is the franchise that went all in on Sheldon Jackson). But what they got (and no one could have anticipated that) was the new Lynn. Same temperament. Salt.

This allowed Narine to flourish. Note when Gurbaz replaced Salt, Narine’s batting fell away.

With Salt, Narine batted as if a load had been lifted from his shoulder. He has never looked happier.

KKR got the best performance ever out of two of their depreciating assets. But that’s not even half the story.

(Contd)
With the starts that KKR got, with Narine and Salt (who they did not select at auction) it’s tempting to attribute most of KKR’s batting success to them.

But the reason they could bat like this was because KKR had the assurance of 3 of the best finishers: Dre, Rinku and the real gem: Ramandeep.

Bought at 20 lacs, and batting at 8, he struck at 200 and ended with an average of 35 ! No other side had finishers like these (SRH had Abdul Samad to go with Klassen) and KKR had 3 ! 3 of the best.

This “India is a union of states” is written in the Constitution (because that’s how India was constituted when it was written), it’s a definition, in the way my body is an union of my organs. (1/n)
Congress, when it ruled unimpeded, by people directly in RaGa’s line, had no conception of this. It used policies like Freight Equalization to destroy certain states, without their agency, to derive political benefit. There was no EU flavor then.
Now that the Congress is resigned to being out of power at the center for generations, same RaGa, uses that out of its historical context, to imply that states can secede. That’s the way for Congress to come to power.

While Rajamouli et al make cinematic spectacles rooted in Indian tradition, creating a world that to global audiences unique even in its over-the-topness, Bollywood keeps on making MI or Fast and Furious clones without the technical finesse. Why would Indians watch?
But that used to make these movies before too. Of course they did, we had no choice. Now OTT gives us choice for nearly free. Why would we go to the theater for a pale, dated, imitation?
Forget art. Think of a movie as a product. Why would you not differentiate it from your competitors? When John Abraham in the trailer threatens world annihilation, all I could think of was Dr Evil in Austin Powers doing exactly the same as spoof.

On Twitter, Meta layoffs.

There are a lot of upsides to working in FAANG and FAANG-type companies, and that is why they attract the best talent. Good salaries, insane stock grants.

But that’s really where the downside, often not seen, starts.
Many of these companies are effectively Ponzi schemes. They generate excitement in market (“we will go full VR” ), create grossly optimistic projections, raise capital from market, pay off investors (the ones they got on the “n-1” hype), give some to employees, rinse-repeat.
That’s why they have to expand rapidly, improve metrics (more users, more new products) and through this, conventional metrics of a “good business” go out of the window, like “how much profit does it make”? Here is Twitter, note how it’s income is almost always negative.

Been in india for 3 weeks now and one amazing thing is the efficiency of delivery services. Those who stay in India have no idea how terrible delivery services are in major cities like LA. Some anecdotes…
During the height of covid, we tried subscribing to a paid service for grocery delivery. You couldn’t get a slot for weeks, when we got one, the guy delivered the grocery two days late and bought only half of the stuff. We cancelled.
I used a food delivery app twice. First time, the delivery man came after 3 hours. Second time, the delivery man went to the wrong store, reached the right store after it had closed, picked up the phone after 2 hours and couldn’t speak English.
