As a grassroots, anti-racist, nonviolent global movement, BDS plays a critical role in the struggle to expose and dismantle Israel’s regime of settler-colonialism, military occupation and apartheid.
We, Indigenous Palestinians, have been struggling for a century against the Zionist settler colonial project, which in 1948 established Israel as an apartheid regime.
Our struggle to resist its ethnic cleansing and fragmentation of our people & land is now bearing fruit.
Rooted in decades of Palestinian popular resistance, the BDS movement is inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement & US Civil Rights struggle.
At the 2001 Durban civil society conference against racism, the Palestinian anti-apartheid struggle gained global support.
In 2005, 170+ Palestinian unions, coalitions & grassroots orgs called for boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) to end Israel’s occupation, colonialism, apartheid & denial of the right of our refugees to return.
2007: BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest Palestinian coalition, formed as the democratic leadership of the global movement.
2008: BNC position paper builds consensus against Israel as occupation, settler-colonial & apartheid regime against the entire Palestinian people.
Since 2005, Israeli Apartheid Week has annually mobilized global support for the anti-apartheid BDS movement through education and action.
Since 2014, community orgs, cultural spaces, and grassroots movements have been declaring themselves Apartheid Free Zones.
UN ESCWA, CERD as well as 3 UN Special Rapporteurs have affirmed that Israel’s regime of racial domination over Palestinians constitutes apartheid.
The time for a UN investigation into Israel's apartheid is NOW!
2020: Palestinian civil society calls for pressure on govts around the world to take action to end Israel’s apartheid against Palestinians. They demand a comprehensive military embargo, suspension of trade and cooperation, supporting ICC probe and #UNinvestigateApartheid.
100s of leaders from Latin America, Asia, and Africa, including former Presidents, MPs, diplomats, and cultural figures coalesce around the Global South Response in 2020, responding to the Palestinian civil society call and endorsing its demands.
Major human rights orgs such as @amnesty, @hrw and @BTselem have added their voices to what Palestinians, including the BDS movement, have been saying for many years - Israel is an apartheid regime.
Their reports enable further mainstreaming and advocacy to #DismantleApartheid
Led by South Africa and Namibia, with their history of anti-apartheid struggles, a growing number of parliaments and govts are acknowledging that Israel is guilty of apartheid and calling for UN mechanisms to end this crime against humanity.
At 17, the BDS movement is growing, globalizing and building effective, intersectional solidarity with the Palestinian anti-apartheid, anti-colonial struggle.
Freedom. Justice. Equality.
As the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world, India's healthcare system struggled to cope with the spread. Still, Modi's government ordered 16,479 Israeli Negev machine guns, worth $116 million.
Journalist syndicates, unions and federations should:
- End ties with complicit Israeli institutions.
- Pledge to refuse junkets to Israel funded by the Israeli government, complicit Israeli institutions and Israel lobby groups.
- Support journalists who refuse to cover assignments in Israel on ethical grounds.
- Support the International Federation of Journalists @IFJGlobal's case before the @IntlCrimCourt on Israel’s systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists.
Earlier this week on #PressFreedomDay2022, @mbachelet, the @UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the use of Israeli NSOGroup's spyware #Pegasus against journalists worldwide as "an affront to privacy and press freedom."
Last year, @FbdnStories denounced the use of Israeli spyware Pegasus against more than 180 journalists in 20 countries around the world. #BanCyberSurveillance
Pegasus was created by the Israeli company @NSOgroup. The Israeli government, which sponsors, licenses, regulates, and supports NSO, considers the company’s weapons-grade spyware “a crucial component of its foreign policy and national security.”
Former Honduran President, Juan Hernández, “poster boy” of Israeli diplomacy, is charged with sponsoring a “corrupt & violent drug-trafficking conspiracy.”
🧵Let's explore the deadly links between Hernández’s regime and apartheid Israel.
Apartheid Israel propped up Hernández's ruthless regime with weapons, military training & access to the Trump White House. In return, Honduras voted against Palestinian rights at the @UN & agreed to move its embassy to occupied Jerusalem.
Israeli-armed Honduran forces were implicated in the “torture, rape, … kidnappings & killings of journalists, students, opposition activists, … activists on behalf of farmers’ rights, homeless rights, & indigenous communities’ rights.”
JNF is directly involved in apartheid Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Indigenous Bedouin-Palestinians, destroying livelihoods under the guise of 'planting trees'.
Palestinians in Al-Naqab peacefully resist Israel’s forced displacement & dispossession.
We commemorate 34 years since the beginning of the 1st Intifada when Palestinians rose up in unity against Israel's brutal occupation.
A collective and inclusive movement spread from Gaza across historic Palestine calling for boycotts & strikes against Israel's colonial regime.
From 1987 - 1993 Palestinians rose up in their masses to end apartheid Israel's illegal occupation. They insisted on the right of return for Palestinian refugees, ethnically cleansed during the Nakba, and the right to build a free and democratic society.
The 1st Intifada was met with brutally violent Israeli repression. PM Rabin instructed his army to “break the bones” of Palestinian youth. More than 1,300 Palestinians were murdered, 120,000+ were injured, and some 600,000 were imprisoned by Israel's apartheid forces.
