icing on the cake: the new owner appears to be none other than notorious slumlord peter hungerford. but we’ve taken him on before and we can take him on again!
a thread on peter, the hungerford building, @RocTenantUnion, and how we fight back 1/7
peter hungerford was one of the worst slumlords in rochester — 100s of open code violations, truly horrific conditions like black mold, sewage back up, displaying a complete disregard for human dignity. 2/7 democratandchronicle.com/story/news/201…
tenants in his buildings like @Snowhyte5 organized, went on rent strikes, stopped mass evictions, got the city to sue him, forced the sale of his properties, and won #GoodCause protections for themselves along with million dollar renovations!!! 3/7 democratandchronicle.com/story/news/202…
now he’s back to gentrify EMMA — trying to force out long time tenants from residents to artists to small businesses, cornerstones of our community. 4/7
but we don’t have to take this lying down! we can pass policies like #GoodCause and #TOPA that protect tenants from gentrification.
and we can organize!!! peter’s tenants at thurston road stopped their retaliatory building wide evictions through strategy and solidarity!
5/7
i am asking everyone upset at this news to not simply accept that that landlord greed will always take precedence over community need. nothing here is set in stone!
tenants have fought peter hungerford before and WON. we can fight and win again! 6/7
if you want to build tenant power and learn how to win, become a member of @RocTenantUnion!!! let’s fight for the rochester we deserve! we provide organizing support and trainings and more. 7/7 roctenantunion.org/get-involved
