The first ballot in the #ToryLeadershipContest is taking place today, so here are some facts about the 8 MPs who could become Prime Minister in just a matter of weeks.🧵👇🏽
1) Rishi Sunak.
Worth £730 million. Held a green card (= a permanent US resident) while he was Chancellor. His wife used non-dom status to avoid tax.
Said he would run the economy like Thatcher.
Biggest drop in living standards since 1956 while he was Chancellor.
2) Penny Mordaunt.
Previously supported greater rights for trans people. U-turned and lied about her previous position to win Tory votes.
Lied about Turkey joining the EU in the Brexit referendum.
Lied to firefighters while Fire Minister about guaranteeing pensions.
3) Tom Tugendhat.
When asked what's the naughtiest thing he's ever done, joked that he "invaded a country once".
Praised Saudi Arabian dictator Mohammed Bin Salman.
Suggested expelling all Russian citizens from the UK after Putin's invasion of Ukraine, before backtracking.
4) Liz Truss.

Said she would leave European Convention on Human Rights in order to deport refugees to Rwanda.
Attacked trans rights while Equalities Secretary.
5) Suella Braverman.

Wants to leave the European Court of Human Rights.

Pushed a far-right antisemitic conspiracy theory.
6) Jeremy Hunt.
Inflicted real-terms cuts on the NHS while Health Secretary.
Wants to reduce corporation tax from 19-25% to 15%.
Restructured a company he co-founded to reduce his tax bill by £100,000.
Wants to bring back fox hunting.
7) Kemi Badenoch.
Wants to abandon 2050 net zero carbon emissions target.
Said she doesn't care about colonialism.
Held secret meetings with LGB Alliance and "ex-gay" groups while Equalities Secretary. Recorded describing trans women as "men using women’s bathrooms".
8) Nadhim Zahawi.
Reportedly worth £100 million. Concerns raised about his taxes. Investigated by the National Crime Agency and Serious Fraud Office.
Paid the power bill for his stables with taxpayers' money.
Said he would leave the ECHR to deport refugees to Rwanda.
The point is that the Tory leadership contest offers no real choice at all - all the options are bad.
Roughly 200,000 Conservative Party members will decide the next Prime Minister, with huge consequences for all of us.
The public must have a say. We need a general election.

As Ministers spent Christmas Day in the comfort of their homes, they told 67 people trying to cross the Channel they’re not welcome.
The Borders Bill is the govt doubling down on political choices that have already cost lives. It will be a death sentence for future refugees.
Talk of criminal gangs is a tactic to distract from the government’s hostile environment creating perfect conditions for traffickers: closing safe and legal routes, stripping people’s rights when they arrive, plus foreign policy decisions forcing many to move in the first place.
To stop people dying in the Channel, we must completely reimagine our immigration system.
The status quo is free movement for the rich only. FM for all would not only benefit the person moving, it would reduce exploitation by criminal gangs and employers, benefitting everyone.
As I pointed out in my maiden speech, this is a government of ministers who boast about their Class A drug use at uni, while criminalising teenagers in my community dealing weed.
Now it is turbo-charging the war on drugs. This won’t work and will continue to wreck lives.

The war on drugs hasn’t stopped people taking drugs.
In the 50 years since the Misuse of Drugs Act, drug use has increased.
Less than 10,000 people took heroin before 1971, over 250,000 do now. Less than half a million used cannabis, over 2.5 million do today. 2/7
The war on drugs hasn’t stopped people dying.
After decades of failed policy, drug-related deaths in the UK are at the highest level on record.
Policy should be evidence-led and aim to reduce harm. This is primarily an issue of public health, not for criminal courts. 3/7
On sexual harassment allegations made of Boris Johnson’s father, Nadine Dorries said “I don’t believe it happened. It never happened to me. Perhaps there is something wrong with me.”
Let’s unpack why this is so dangerous:
1. Women have a right to be believed.
When sexual harassment and abuse are sanctioned from the top, that silences all women and lets abusers get away with it.
(And misogyny exists on a spectrum, so our response to harassment also impacts victims of the most serious violence)
2. This is the myth that people you like can’t possibly also be abusers.
They can. Abusers use charm and status to perpetrate abuse.
I have spoken to both the Health Secretary and Nottingham City Council Director of Public Health, about a case of the new COVID variant detected in Nottingham. (1/5)
The household of the case and their contacts have been tested and are isolating.
There is not currently evidence of other cases, so UKHSA has assessed that wider community testing is not necessary, but this will be reviewed and there will be increased testing in schools. (2/5)
I encourage residents to continue to follow public health guidance: get vaccinated, wear face coverings, get tested no matter how mild your symptoms, and self-isolate until you receive results. (3/5)
