🗃 1/11

When using an Analog #zettelkasten, you don't get a search button. You can't use control + f. I believe this is a feature, and not a bug. Here's a thread on why. A picture of my Antinet
🗃 2/11

Ultimately, the reason we take notes, is so we never have to look at those notes again... Let me explain:

If you remembered every piece of knowledge you absorbed from watching videos, listening to podcasts and reading books. You would have no reason to take notes.
🗃 3/11

The goal of taking notes is not to be able to read those notes again in the future, but to absorb that which you are writing down. The goal is to imprint the ideas into your mind, so that you can write and talk about them with ease.
🗃 4/11

Imprinting ideas into your long term memory is not easy. It takes effort, time, and a deep understanding of the topic.

The Analog Zettelkasten (Antinet) forces you to continuously think about your notes - further stamping them into your memory.
🗃 5/11

When you want to find a note, you need to THINK of what other topics it might be related to so you can look it up in your index and find it.

This makes you THINK about the idea or card you are looking for.
🗃 6/11

ON TOP of making you think of the thing you are looking for, you are doing maintenance on all other topics that you encounter on the way there.

The topics on your index card
The topics in your ZK as you navigate to the location
Ideas close to the desired location
🗃 7/11

By having the search take effort, you THINK about literally everything on the way to the card you want.

This sounds inconvenient, but remember the goal of taking notes is not to read them again, but to remember what you wrote.
🗃 8/11

By constantly thinking about your notes, even when you don't want to be, you stamp them into your memory.

You don't think when you press control + f.
🗃 9/11

You find exactly what you were looking for much quicker, but you don't understand it any better by the time you get there. You don't understand any of your other ideas better by the time you get there.

You get there too quickly to reinforce anything.
🗃 10/11

This means that the notes you take, when you have access to searching them with control + f, lose a lot of their value. Because they are no longer aiming for the same goal.

The goal of searchable notes, is to find and read them again. Not to build it into your memory.
🗃 11/11

I don't believe those notes are useful in a long term game.
Hope you enjoyed that, and I hope you learned something from it :D
@ScottScheper I believe we have a very similar opinion on this, anything you would add that you think I missed?
@NickMilo We most likely have VERY differing opinions on this - what did I miss in my analysis? Would love to hear your thoughts on the power of instantly finding whatever you are looking for because I'm sure there are benefits I'm simply not thinking of.
@AllossoDan I know you've been using @obsdmd for a while, but are starting to dabble in analog - what are your thoughts on this?
@ArtemKRSV Any thoughts?
@lanewatson As another analog user, what's your opinion on this?
@ChrisAldrich Anything you would add / anything you would disagree with?
If you know anyone who has a differing opinion or would benefit from this thread, please tag them :D

Would love to crowdsource opinions
@iameddyhood We talked about this a little in our meeting, anything else you would add?
@ArchLeucoryx Any thoughts? Based on your twitter posts, I believe you are working with Logseq and Obsidian?
