Under 100% attendance aspirations, advice to schools which flows to parents is they must send their child into school with Covid (or other symptoms such as conjunctivitis, tonsillitis, slapped cheek, hand foot & mouth etc).
Parental authority & right to determine fitness to attend is questioned left right & centre. Super Nanny State is bullying families. The #schoolsbill determines to charge LAs & schools they MUST work to reduce the number & duration of EVERY absence.
My kid had H1N1 in 2018 and ended up in hospital. They were so unwell for 5 weeks. The pressure to return to school and concern around lost learning was horrific. We didn’t give a monkeys about missed learning - our kid narrowly escaped special care unit! 🙄
What this meant was an erosion of the relationship w school. They seemed only to care because of lost learning & targets. Of course they did care about more than that. But action was solely around attendance & learning. Rather than compassion & caring.
Covid is showing us how irresponsible devil-may-care presenteeism has knock on impact w productivity, mental health, wellbeing, chronic illness, attainment, progress. We are organic beings in a symbiotic system. If we don’t protect the vulnerable, if we don’t care, we all lose.
