1/ Rep. Joel Ferry is holding on to his seat in the Utah House while simultaneously working as acting director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources — an arrangement which appears to violate the Utah Constitution's separation of powers #utpol #utleg

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
2/ Gov. Spencer Cox's office says the situation is okay because Ferry has been removed from assignments that deal with natural resources, and he is not taking legislative compensation #utpol #utleg

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
3/ Ferry is working in an acting role while he awaits confirmation by the Utah Senate.

It's not clear when the GOP-controlled Senate plans to take up his nomination.

Ferry did not answer questions about whether he'll resign once confirmed #utpol #utleg

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
4/ There may be a good political reason for Republicans to slow-walk Ferry's confirmation. He's still on the ballot for his HD1 seat, and the GOP can't replace him with another candidate.

The only other candidate in the race is a Democrat #utpol #utleg

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
5/ Ferry could wait to resign until after the election, which would keep the seat in GOP hands and allow Republican delegates to pick his replacement #utpol #utleg

SCOTUS just issued an opinion in Carson v. Makin.

The court rules 6-3 that Maine violated the free exercise clause of the Constitution by refusing to provide public funding for private religious schools.
This is a MASSIVE decision.

The conservative majority holds the First Amendment REQUIRES Maine taxpayers to fund explicitly religious schools.

Essentially, they overrule the establishment clause (separation of church and state) with the free exercise clause.
Breyer's dissent takes the decision to its logical conclusion.

Does this mean "a school district that pays for public schools must pay equivalent funds to parents who wish to send their children to religious schools?"

I'm watching the live stream of @UTJasonPreston's event with Roger Stone.

The speaker when talking about guns just said, "We have something in our audience tonight the Democrats don't have. Bullets, guns and God."

So, that event is going swimmingly.
@UTJasonPreston Another speaker just said, "We don't want to overthrow the government. We want to overthrow the people who are perverting the Constitution. We can all agree that Congress is full of people who pervert the Constitution."

Yikes.
Roger Stone, looking like a 4th tier Batman villain, says the election is no longer a fight between Republicans and Democrats.

"It's a fight between light and dark, a fight between good and evil, a fight between the godly and the godless," Stone says.

Roger Stone is doing his show from Salt Lake City again today.

His first guest is Laura Loomer (R-lunatic) who is running for Congress in Florida.

They're yelling about House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy following the release of audiotapes where he says Trump should resign.
Loomer has been speaking for several minutes nonstop, mostly about election integrity.

She says the 2020 election was stolen (it wasn't), and is taking credit for getting Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney kicked out of House leadership.

That claim...is a little dubious.
Loomer calls herself "a woman of action" and asks for donations.

She says she doesn't use Stripe for donations (because she's been banned).

She's been banned from all sorts of stuff, mostly for being racist.

Some Republican candidates for the #utleg have taken some extreme right-wing positions, including outright support for the QAnon conspiracy theory #utpol

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
One such candidate is retired police officer Angie Martin, who is running against Daniel Thatcher in SD11.

On her telegram channel, she has directly quoted "Q," the purported high-level government official at the center of the QAnon conspiracy #utpol

sltrib.com/news/politics/…
Martin also has referred multiple times to "frazzledrip," the wild conspiracy theory that claims Hillary Clinton and her former aide murdered a child, cut off its face to wear as a mask and drank the blood as part of a Satanic sacrifice #utpol

Earlier today, @johnforutah recorded a podcast with @utjasonpreston and Roger Stone.

Preston has hired Stone and some of his associates (who have ties to the right-wing Proud Boys) to oversee his website.

Let's break down that conversation!

fb.watch/cxRFX9A62_/
Johnson starts by noting my earlier tweets pointing out Stone's well-documented animus toward Mormons.

Stone called it baseless (it's not) and then pivots to his renewed Christian faith.

A good list of Stone's years-long mockery of Mormons is here:

mediamatters.org/roger-stone/to…
Why is Stone backing Preston? His answer would be devastating in another era.

"The problem today are the gutless, feckless, weak-kneed, lily-livered, corrupt, white wine-swilling, brie cheese-eating, country club belonging, Volvo driving establishment Republicans."

Quick 🧵:

Sen. Mike Lee did a TV interview today in Utah and he was asked exactly one question about his texts with Mark Meadows.

One. Single. Question.

"There were text messages between me and my friend Mark Meadows at the point I was looking into whether there was any truth to whether some states were planning to rescind or modify their electoral votes," Lee said.

That's...not what the texts show.
Lee was actively working to overturn the election results in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6.

The day after the election was called for Trump, Lee texted Meadows to encourage Trump's team to explore every legal remedy available.
