5 reasons why the #988Lifeline will make a difference for kids— a quick🧵

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for kids starting at age 10. Horrifically, it's also in the top 10 causes of death for kids starting at age 5.

We need all the help we can get.
1) Texting

988 is available to anyone regardless of age, but a new feature super important for kids and teenagers is the ability to directly text 988—and they are using it.

In the large California sample below, 90% of individuals texting for help in a crisis were 18 or younger
2) Schools

988 & mobile crisis can respond to behavioral incidents at schools without police.

In CT, mobile crisis units partnered with schools to address the school-to-prison pipeline. Participating schools saw a decrease in school arrests of 40-100%

3) #LGBTQIA

With the ongoing bullying, discrimination, and abandonment they face, we need to do more to keep LGBTQ+ kids safe—45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year!

988 specifically includes support for LGBTQ youth.

4) In-home services

Crisis services for kids should focus on keeping kids at home and school, rather than removing them to a facility, which is standard for adults. 988 & the crisis continuum of care give us a mechanism to implement this.

5) Conserving inpatient beds

There's no room in hospitals for all the kids who need them. But what if we had another option?

With a reliable crisis continuum of care for kids, we could conserve inpatient beds for the sickest and treat others at home.

A quick note on implementation:

States implementing 988 & crisis services in an integrated fashion are making the biggest difference for kids.

Meaning these services are covered by insurance— including Medicaid—and are easily accessible by families, pediatricians, and schools.
