1) It’s good more people didn’t die in the Indiana mall mass shooting
2) Relying on untrained and unvetted armed civilians to take out the gunmen we’ve given easy access to arsenals and ammunition is an absurd and ineffective public safety strategy
First, accuracy with a firearm depends on training – and police, who are highly trained, have an average hit rate of between 18 and 40%. Permitless carry laws - like in Indiana - strip all training requirements to carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public.ajc.com/blog/get-schoo…
Second, a growing body of research shows that when lawmakers make is easier for people to carry guns in public, violent crime rates go up. In fact, when states first passed concealed carry laws, violent crime rates rose by 13 to 15%. nber.org/system/files/w…
And in states where permit issuers had limited or no discretion in issuing concealed carry permits, handgun homicide rates were 11% higher than states where law enforcement and permit issuers could exercise broad discretion in permitting. ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.21…
As Indiana lawmakers have loosened gun laws, gun deaths have increased 78% from 2011 to 2020, compared to a 33% increase nationwide.
The rate of gun suicides increased 41% and gun homicide increased 142% from 2011 to 2020, compared to a 12% increase and 70% increase nationwide.
And yet Indiana has among the highest state rates of household gun ownership per capita. It’s almost like all of those guns aren’t actually making Hoosiers safer, but are being used in gun homicides and suicides (while enriching the gun lobby).
So the solution actually isn’t to arm more people - data shows that makes us LESS safe. The solution is to keep guns away from people who shouldn’t have them - especially people with dangerous histories, who exhibit warning signs and who are under age 21. thetrace.org/2019/02/rifle-…
Defensive gun use is rare. The data gun extremists use to cite “millions of defensive uses” came from a phone survey not meant for national extrapolation, and that used the same methodology as a study that found 20M Americans have been contacted by aliens. jhsph.edu/sebin/u/c/myth…
Guns are used to threaten and kill people far more often than they are used in self defense. This study found most incidents of self-defense are self-reported and unreliable at best, illegal at worst. injuryprevention.bmj.com/content/6/4/263
So what could Indiana lawmakers do to protect citizens from gun violence?
Require permits, background checks & safety training
Prevent domestic abusers from accessing guns
An assault weapons and large capacity magazine ban
Waiting periods
Community violence intervention funding
The NRA and gun extremists sure are eager to celebrate when one person kills a mass shooter who just murdered three people in a crowded food court, but they’re always silent when armed police and guards fail to stop other regular horrific shootings. time.com/6182970/good-g…

In 2016, Philando Castile, a 32-year-old school cafeteria worker and permitted gun owner, was fatally shot by a Minnesota police officer as he reached for his driver license during a traffic stop. In 2017, the officer was acquitted on all charges. 🧵
The Minneapolis officer who fatally shot Castile had attended a “Bulletproof Warrior” seminar, which asks the question: “Are you ready to kill?” thetrace.org/2020/06/warrio…
Following the shooting, the NRA stated it would wait for more facts, which was heavily criticized given the organization's swift defense of other gun owners. The NRA later released a statement calling the incident "troublesome" but did not offer a full defense of Castile.
“Trump understands politics as the interplay of power and ideology. His opponents see politics as procedure … never has the Democrats’ technocratic, legalistic approach been more detrimental to the cause of democracy.” nytimes.com/2025/02/15/opi…
“It’s not Trump who doesn’t have ideas; it’s the people who should be fighting to stop Trump’s autocratic breakthrough.”
“Admonitions to obey the law will not stop Trump and will not dissuade his supporters. Trump’s bad ideas must be countered with good ones. His attack on the government has to be contrasted with a vision of how the system could work and should work…”
Going on Sunday shows and spewing consultant speak isn't going to cut it.
Twelve inspectors general fired and there's no sit-in? No filibuster? No direction to voters? And in fact, some of you are actually voting for Trump's agenda?
I have been a loyal "normie Dem" my whole life, but to watch them make millions off of stock trades, cozy up to people they admitted were fascists, trade obligation for access, and play internal politics while democracy is destroyed is a disappointment I don't have words for.
Not only is the cavalry not coming, but it's apparently supporting the other side. It's up to all of the Americans who didn't vote for this shit show to show up.
Even though someone tried to assassinate Donald Trump two months ago, a man with an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, a scope, a GoPro camera and two backpacks was able to get within 400 yards of Trump’s golf club. Why? Because of Republican laws that allow “guns everywhere.”
No one is safe in America—not even a Presidential candidate guarded by Secret Service—because gun extremism has given everyone easy access to arsenals, no questions asked. Thanks to open carry and permitless carry, would be assassins are law abiding citizens until they open fire.
Last year, despite the objections of police and citizens, @GovRonDeSantis signed permitless carry, allowing people to buy guns with no background check, permit or training. Florida Republicans are also trying lower the minimum age from 21 to 18 for people to buy long guns.
NEW: Colorado lawmakers like @RepMegFroe are asking Supreme Court Justice Monica Márquez to address the family court system “crisis” that led to Rachel Pickrel-Hawkins being jailed for refusing “reunification therapy” between her sons and the ex charged with raping their daughter
Pickrel-Hawkins has generated intense national interest, attracting more than 5 million views on Twitter, and donors contributed $70,000 to defray her legal costs: “I cannot thank you enough for standing with me to fight for the children.” facebook.com/61550070298795…
Also signing the petition letter were House Majority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge; Rep. Eliza Hamrick, D-Centennial; Rep. Barbara McLachlan, D-Durango; and Sen. Dafna Michaelson Jenet, D-Commerce City.
Fellow white women: I've spent the last decade organizing you and I know firsthand the impact you can have when you use your economic and political power for good. This MUST be the election when a majority of us help elect the first woman, a Black woman, President. That means...
Do the work: It's not enough to just send a donation; host a fundraiser. It's not enough just to vote; join door knocking and phonebanking events every week. It's not enough to support the VP silently; push back on every person who tells you a Black woman can't get elected.
Have the conversations: You are the best messenger to convince other white women who to vote for and why. Your relationships with your white family members and your friends are fertile ground for transformation and conversion. Start persuading!
