A 🧵 with many resources for applying to *PostDocs* in Astrophysics 👇👇👀 @AcademicChatter What resources do you recommend or did I forget? 😊😊♥️ #SharingIsCaring Photo of an astronomer looking at the night sky, in the cent
First: some "general" resources, that might provide a good overview of the application process (and how to decide whether you want to apply for a postdoc/fellowship):
1) YouTube 📹 presentation on "How to apply for PostDocs (in the USA)"  by David Charbonneau @ExoCharbonneau: and PDF of the slides: broekgaarden.nl/floor/wordpres…
This was part of our new workshop series @CenterForAstro ♥️
2) great PDF slides from Sera Markoff @ProfSeraMarkoff on how to apply for postdocs with lots of great advices seramarkoff.com/wp-content/upl…. I've attended Sera's talk a few years back at @GRAPPAinstitute/@uva_api and still think about it often! Screenshot of the first slide by Sera Markoff that says &quo
3) PDF slides of “how to apply for postdocs” by Richard Alexander (U. of Leicester)
astro.le.ac.uk/~rda5/rda_jobs…
4) Great slides on "How to apply for postdoc positions in Astronomy" by Mary Loli Martinez Aldama (CFT/Poland) and Dhanya Nair (JIVE/NL) astro.udec.cl/titans/postdoc… screenshot of the slide showing the outline that says "
5) Guide by Bryan Gaensler (@SciBry) & Sarah Maddison on “how to apply for postdocs” (with a slight Australian focus): dunlap.utoronto.ca/~bgaensler/pap…
6) the many many helpful career resources by @astrobetter astrobetter.com/wiki/Possible+…
Which includes many blogs and resources for careers outside of academia!! (which is so important!) screenshot of the astrobetter page with career resources. It
7) Very useful thread on postdoc application advice on twitter by Malena Rice!! @malena_rice ♥️♥️:
8) slides for "PostDoc job applications "don't panic" guide" by Chris Blake (from @Swinburne) astronomy.swin.edu.au/~cblake/JobApp… screenshot of the first slide of the presentation http://ast
How to find jobs/postdocs?
9) AAS job register(!!!) jobregister.aas.org
10) astrophysics job rumor mill from last year and ALSO two and three years ago — some jobs are only offered every 2-3 years (astrobetter.com/wiki/tiki-inde…)
11) websites of depts you’re really interested in
12) talk to people (profs, current postdocs) at places you’re interested in
13) talk to people here who have been postdocs there in the past
14) talk to your advisor
15) ask the grad students who graduated 1-2 years ahead of you
16) some fields maintain their own lists, for example, Gravitational Waves has: wiki.ligo.org/LAAC/JobPostin… created by the @LIGO collaboration
17) @BlackInAstro maintains a list with resources: blackinastro.com/postdocs
18) "So You Want to be a Professor of Astronomy" discussing some data and barriers of becoming a professor in astronomy. By Wynn Jacobson-Galan astrobites.org/2021/07/16/ast…
writing resume:
19) guide with do’s and don’t on resumes & cover letters (source: OCS Harvard): cdn-careerservices.fas.harvard.edu/wp-content/upl…
writing fellowship applications (e.g., the Hubble):
20) Extremely useful website with resources for applying for the NHFP (“Hubble”): nhfp-equity.org/resources-for-…, which includes many example proposals
21) Bridge, 2019, "Honing your Hubble Fellowship Application" - astrobetter blog:
astrobetter.com/blog/2019/10/0…
22) Joshua Pepper, Oliqia Krupinska, Keivan Stassun and Dawn Gelino (2018) paper on "What Does a Successful Postdoctoral Fellowship Publication Record Look Like?" (analyzing publication record of successfull applicants)
arxiv.org/abs/1810.09505
23) Samples of Application letters for research-focused institutions, research & teaching institutions and teaching only institutions career.ucsf.edu/phds/academic-…
24) blog on how to write a postdoc cover letter:
academicpositions.com/career-advice/…
postdoc interview questions:
25) a twitter thread with examples:
26) see "the interview" section in dunlap.utoronto.ca/~bgaensler/pap…
27) useful twitter thread by @isskywalker with advices for what to do when you are 6 months away from PostDoc applications
28) how to write a cover letter: jobs.ac.uk/media/pdf/care…
**Caveat** note that I haven't gone through the PostDoc application process myself yet 🙃🙃👀, I'm sharing the resources that I've collected over the past years (through my "supporting early-career astronomers networks" ♥️). See for a website version: broekgaarden.nl/floor/wordpres…
Last, in case its relevant; I made a similar post with "applying for PhDs resources" last year:
That's it! MASSIVE GOOD LUCK to everyone out there! ♥️
And thanks to many people who inspired/contributed in some way to this post, including @silvia_toonen, @samayanissanke, Davide Gerosa, @astroenrico, @AspenPhysics, everyone mentioned above and so many more.

Awesome paper by @Tomer_Shenar from @uva_api and co in @NatureAstronomy today, where they find an "unseen" ~9Msun BH around an O star outside our Milky Way. This might be the first of such BHs that won't be disputed given the properties + it suggests low SN kicks (& mass loss)
paper which is written by a large team including @kjb_astro, @jbodenst3 @Paul_Crowther , @silvia_toonen and many twitter-less authors can be found: …-nature-com.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/articles/s4155…
"1st: unlike the majority of previously reported X-ray-quiescent OB + BH binaries, whose analysis relied on interpretation of complex, near-static spectral emission lines, VFTS 243 exhibits a regular O-type star spectrum with no remarkable features"
