1/ finding the truth requires overcoming human psychological biases

Our brains use heuristics constantly. Heuristics are inherently backwards facing. They are based on a mental model of the world that currently exists
2/ but venture investing is about imagining a new world

This is why heuristics are bad. And especially why analogies are bad

To find the truth about how new markets can function, or how you can reshape existing markets, you must therefore *actively fight* heuristics
3/ our IC process is at its core designed to fight heuristics that lead to sub optimal decisions

The only way to do that is meticulous market structure examination. And that means arguing over every detail
4/ our investment memos our littered with comments questioning almost every statement - or even outright claiming that statements are false

This is the only way to overcome the heuristics that our brains naturally use to actually find the truth
5/ it sounds brutal. And it kinda is. Multicoin IC is not fun. But everyone adapts to it over time

We bicker over minutia. And then we laugh and make jokes and banter.
6/ Although it can feel personal, it never is. Tushar and I always push the team to get back up and try again, and to continue to explore and imagine, and everyone does

Finding the truth isn’t fun. But it is super intellectually rewarding.

Onwards and upwards. LFG!

0/ Some thoughts on the 3AC situation
1/ Had ~10 people (1 from each of the major lenders) just got on a Zoom and talked to one another

We probably wouldn’t have ended up here. They would have realized what 3AC was doing and could have acted sooner
2/ Likely that 3AC made fraudulent representations to counterparties. I don’t think the risk mgmt teams at all of these place were that stupid. I think they were at least partially lied to + lacked incentives to coordinate (see prior tweet)

0/ Teamed up with @ballmatthew and @BitwiseInvest to launch a metaverse focused crypto index

And Bitwise is concurrently launching a fund to track the index

multicoin.capital/es/2022/06/07/…
1/ Multicoin is known for high concentration, non-consensus investments

What are we doing with a passive index?
2/ Our mandate is to accelerate the adoption of crypto systems via capital allocation

The metaverse may be the most important vector of that over a decade long horizon

0/ A thread on decision making (DM)

Both personally, and in the context of investment decisions at Multicoin
1/ As a general statement about life, simple > complex

Concise > verbose

etc

This is particularly important in the context of DM. But how do you embody simplicity in the context of DM?
2/ By optimizing for a single variable

0/ We co-led a $3M round in Marginfi

Marginfi is a defi-native prime brokerage

Marginfi is *the* quintessential example of composability on Solana. I highlighted Marginfi extensively in my composability presentation at the Multicoin Summit

1/ What’s a prime brokerage (PB)?

Big banks - GS, JPM, MS, etc. - offer 3 main PB services to hedge funds:

A/ connectivity to all venues
b/ leverage
C/ cross-margin positions, even across venues
2/

A is straightforward

b - leverage. Where does the capital come from to offer leverage? Deposits from the bank!

c - with enough capital and some risk mgmt tools, a PB can offer cross-margining to clients even across venues

0/ In addition to our investment in Ceramic, we are also announcing our investment in @fluence_project today

multicoin.capital/2022/02/16/com…
1/ Fluence is a permissionless network for Web3 compute

The simplest mental model is decentralized AWS Lambda

write functions once, deploy across the Fluence network around the world
2/ Fluence can read from any public data source - Ethereum Solana Ceramic Arweave IPFS etc - and write back once finished
