Seeing the uproar around #TDJakes comments, my friend and I have this conversation ALL the time about Black women. I will die on this hill- Black women (overall) have NEVER had the luxury of simply being. We never had the luxury to just have a smooth life.
Black women were brought to the country in chains. Our men shackled. We have been raped, beaten, abused, nursed children we didn’t birth, watched our men be slaughtered, and still had to work in fields for a harvest we never enjoyed, work in homes we never owned.
Black women have never been afforded the opportunity to be, to relax, to laugh, to lounge, to not go to work, to stay at home and take care of house and kids with no worries about bills. When has that time period EVER existed for Black women?
Black women aren’t strong because we just LOVE being strong. We never had the opportunity to be anything else. That is what is missing from the conversation. Black women were robbed of a life of luxury.

The reason police reform will not work is because one the entire police system is fruit from a poisonous tree and two police reform is a HEART issue. It’s not a “I went to 2 hours of mandatory DEI training” issue.
As I stated in my article, When It Comes To The Murder of Breonna Taylor, There is No Glass Half Full, “When you reform something, you make changes in order to improve what already exists. However, when you transform something, you change something into something else.”
Two hours, 24 hours whatever, of DEI training is NOT going to reform anything. This is a PERSONAL issue. When you are truly transformed you are a new person. That takes WORK. Breaking down long held beliefs, etc. That doesn’t happen overnight.

It has been extremely difficult for me to even comment on #JaylandWalker. What can we say that hasn’t already been said? We have watched White men slaughter kids, adults and be taken in with burger and fries. There is no need in life to shoot anyone 40 times. None.
The police only understand violence towards Black people. This isn’t a reform issue. You can’t reform this. The entire policing system is a joke and a scam created to harm Black people and make white people feel safe because Black people exist.
But MARK MY WORDS this issue doesn’t end with Black people. Because they will soon be at your doorstep too. And it’s only going to stop one way. That’s all I will say about that.

For all the allies supporting Simone Biles for speaking up for herself, please remember that at work when a Black woman speaks up in staff meeting. Support her IN the meeting - not in the hallway AFTER the meeting, when you whisper, “I wish I was as strong as you.”
I realized that Black women were just your plaything, something to entertain you on Twitter and Facebook. We were your live and in color resistance rom-com Black best friend. We were your “hey, girl,” “yas,” and high fives. We were your sassy finger snap, neck roll, and “Auntie.”
We were the face of your resistance memes as we “reclaimed our time.” Black women made the days pass faster until you could get your next Resistance fix. Until the next march, the next hashtag, the next knitted hat, Black women were your entertainment.

There is always another side just become, Black Girl.

Become, Black Girl.

I see you, Black Girl. Find yourself, Black Girl. Know your worth, Black Girl. Don’t settle, Black Girl. Breathe, Black Girl. Take care of yourself, Black Girl. Own your dopeness, Black Girl. Image
Put yourself first, Black Girl. Love yourself, Black Girl. Dance in the rain, Black Girl. Embrace your body, Black Girl. Cry, Black Girl. You don’t have to be strong all the time, Black Girl. Rest, Black Girl. Own your creativity, Black Girl. You are beautiful, Black Girl. Image
Cherish all hues of you, Black Girl. You’ve always been enough, Black Girl. Love who you desire, Black Girl. Don’t let them use you, Black Girl. Stand in your truth, Black Girl. I believe you, Black Girl. I believe in you, Black Girl. Trust yourself, Black Girl. Image

Someone said, “Imagine your history being so horrible you want to ban people from learning it.”

Marinate on that.
You enslaved innocent Black men, women, and children. You murdered innocent Black people. You raped a nation of its resources for your profit. You lynched Black people and took pictures smiling as their bodies hung from trees.
You raped Black women while your wives pretended not to see. You bought and sold Black people for your financial gain. You continue to profit off the backs of Black people. You continue to profit financially from slavery.

It is time to pull out the #DoNotMoveOffTheSidewalk Challenge again. Black people I challenge you for the next 24-48 hours to be aware of your body in spaces and do not move for a White person or make any apologies for physically occupying any space.

Watching several videos of White people attempting to police Black people in spaces, I am reminded that we are here and we belong here and I will not move. I just finished another visit to @MemPeaceJustice & I was reminded of how Black people have always been policed in spaces. Image
