My mother is 73. When she was a child she had to pick cotton. She told me this story ONE time in her entire life and she just told it to me when I was 39 years old. I asked her what happened in those fields. To THIS DAY she says I will not talk about it. A piece of her was lost.

There is clearly something that White people don’t understand - Black people are often in situations where we have to be gracious because to not be, no matter if an offense is committed against us, will reflect badly on us. Seeing the uproar around #TDJakes comments, my friend and I have this conversation ALL the time about Black women. I will die on this hill- Black women (overall) have NEVER had the luxury of simply being. We never had the luxury to just have a smooth life. Black women were brought to the country in chains. Our men shackled. We have been raped, beaten, abused, nursed children we didn’t birth, watched our men be slaughtered, and still had to work in fields for a harvest we never enjoyed, work in homes we never owned.

The reason police reform will not work is because one the entire police system is fruit from a poisonous tree and two police reform is a HEART issue. It’s not a “I went to 2 hours of mandatory DEI training” issue. As I stated in my article, When It Comes To The Murder of Breonna Taylor, There is No Glass Half Full, “When you reform something, you make changes in order to improve what already exists. However, when you transform something, you change something into something else.”

It has been extremely difficult for me to even comment on #JaylandWalker. What can we say that hasn’t already been said? We have watched White men slaughter kids, adults and be taken in with burger and fries. There is no need in life to shoot anyone 40 times. None.

The police only understand violence towards Black people. This isn’t a reform issue. You can’t reform this. The entire policing system is a joke and a scam created to harm Black people and make white people feel safe because Black people exist.

For all the allies supporting Simone Biles for speaking up for herself, please remember that at work when a Black woman speaks up in staff meeting. Support her IN the meeting - not in the hallway AFTER the meeting, when you whisper, “I wish I was as strong as you.” I realized that Black women were just your plaything, something to entertain you on Twitter and Facebook. Senator Wheeler has NO IDEA how it feels to be told you can’t walk in your own community. To be met with officers in riot gear. To get a call and rush to organize because they have murdered David McActee and left his body in the street for over 12 hours.

Yesterday a letter was penned by Senate Majority Caucus Chair @jrajra who is a Republican in Kentucky. The letter and the subsequent rhetoric which seemed directed at protestors didn’t sit right with me. Today, I asked her to meet with me and she did. I made a Facebook post asking her to meet me downtown. Meet me where so many Kentucky politicians are claiming there is lawlessness. And she did. It’s one thing to make comments and you have never been downtown. It’s another to just go walk in the space.

I have been so intrigued watching Watergate documentaries on YouTube. It truly brings into perspective what is happening today. I couldn’t understand why so many people around Trump don’t step and say, “This is wrong,” until I watched the documentary. When you are in The Oval everything is about serving the President. It stops being about country for some people and their only focus is on pleasing the President. Everything they are exist in the bubble of the White House. They enjoy being a part of the “inner circle.”
