Thread.
There is some ridiculous propaganda going around social media about a fake "fertilizer ban" that's being spread by the same convoy folks who push anti-vax nonsense. It needs to be debunked before anyone falls for it.
#cdnpoli
Propaganda spreaders are actually saying we'll all soon have to eat bugs or starve to death. It's nonsense
1. There is no fertilizer ban coming to Canada!
2. There is a voluntary, I repeat - voluntary - 30% emissions reduction target for agriculture
#cdnpoli
3. There is $550 million available to help farmers modernize, keep high yields, and remain competitive and profitable
There are lots of ways to reduce agriculture sector emissions that SAVES farmers money and provides higher yields.
#cdnpoli
Such as:
- No-till farming. According to the Canadian Census, only half of farms with crops suitable for this method have adopted it.
- Crop rotation. Saves need for fertilizer by 20% because the soil doesn't get as depleted.
#cdnpoli
- Marginal lands on farms (classes 4, 5 and 6) do not have high yield potential and by using perennial cover there, farmers can improve profit margins and create a carbon sink.
#cdnpoli
-Time fertilizer products to reduce N2O emissions. There's a spike in nitrous oxide emissions after the spring thaw - farmers who apply fertilizer in the fall put more N2O into the to atmosphere. N2O emissions also are higher when it rains soon after application.
#cdnpoli
-Can use slow-release urea fertilizers, which have a protective coating to control the nitrogen release, giving the plant more time to absorb it. Nitrification and urease inhibitors also help stop the eventual conversion to gas.
#cdnpoli
For animal ag:
- Use livestock feed additives.
- Practice rotational grazing to sequester carbon in soil.
- Select high quality feed that will reduce methane released from enteric fermentation.
- Manage manure to reduce methane and nitrous oxide. Cover manure storage facilities.
The EU and the USA are considering tariffs called a "border carbon adjustment" on high-emission agricultural products, so encouraging farmers to remain competitive is simply SMART economics, not a bug-eating catastrophe!
#cdnpoli
Also, fires, floods & droughts from worsening climate change is OBVIOUSLY a huge threat to farmers and their livelihoods. Curbing emissions in all sectors is necessary to help them.
Please share, support local food, & thank a farmer today for putting food on our tables.
#cdnpoli
Important note:
Slow release fertilizers coated in plastic are not good as they put microplastic into the soil. Until these are made without harmful plastic they are creating a new terrible problem.
Should be legislated to be plant-based coating.

Scare-mongering misinformation about reducing farm emissions is getting ridiculous
1. It's a voluntary reduction target
2. There's $550-million available to help the sector modernize
3. There's options in modern farming to maintain yield + profit & reduce nitrogen 30%
#cdnpoli Image
For animal ag:
Use livestock feed additives.
Practice rotational grazing to sequester carbon in the soil.
Select high quality feed that will reduce methane released from enteric fermentation.
Manage manure to reduce methane and nitrous oxide. Cover manure storage facilities.
Also can try this:
Marginal lands on farms (classes 4, 5 and 6) do not have high yield potential and by using perennial cover there, farmers can improve profit margins and create a carbon sink.

Joke thread:
Two Canadians die and end up in Hell. Satan decides to pay them a visit, so he walks into their room and sees them talking and laughing. Confused, he asks them why they're happy.
#MeanwhileinCanada
They tell him, "Well, we're so sick of the cold where we're from, and this place is nice and toasty."
Satan, annoyed, storms away and goes to Hell's boiler room, where he turns up the temperature.
He goes back to the Canadians' room, along the way being begged by all sorts of people to put the heating back down. He enters the room to see the Canadians having a barbecue. Furiously, he asks them what they're doing.

@AndrewScheer There is a lot of misinformation and spin out there about debt and who is good for the economy: Conservative or Liberals. Here are some Trudeau versus Trump numbers:
Trudeau's 2017-2018 deficit increase = 1.6%
Trump's 2017-2018 deficit increase = 17%
#cdnpoli
@AndrewScheer Canada = $18.1 billion
USA = $779 billion
That is 49 times larger
USA's GDP is 12 times larger than Canada's
USA's population is 9 times larger than Canada's
Trudeau debt to GDP ratio = 87.3 (the LOWEST in G7)
Trump debt to GDP ratio = 106.1
@AndrewScheer Trudeau has the lowest unemployment rate in 40 years.
Canada is now rated 4th most desirable country to invest in by foreign investors - the USA didn't make the top 10.
Canada now has the strongest economy in the G7
Canada now has the fastest growing wages in a decade.
