🧵A lesson from the last #ColdWar. In the 80s, one of the results of China's opening up to the outside world was that many underground movie studios popped up in neighborhoods, showing pirated western movies.
When my friends and I saw images of happy and well-nourished people and fully-stocked grocery stores through these movies, we began to question whether capitalism was really as evil as we were taught .
To our young and simple mind, if Marxist revolution means constant starvation and material shortages and capitalism leads to a full belly and material abundance, we would rather have capitalism.
Similar political awakening took place in other Communist countries too. People either fled to the West or demanded political change at home through protests. It's fair to say that the Berlin Wall fell and the West won the last cold war mainly due to the West's economic strength.
In today's new cold war, however, the West is losing its economic advantage because of its self-defeating energy policies. thefederalist.com/2022/07/25/the…

#HistoryMatters Just read about this Chinese Schindler. His heroic deed deserves to be remembered. His name is Ho Feng-Shan. He was the Chinese Nationalist government’s Consul to Vienna in 1937. He recognized that the Nazi threat was real and urged the nationalist government to
help Vienna’Jew to escape. When his boss didn’t respond, he acted on his own. He began to issue visas to Jews. He told them that they didn’t need a visa to enter Shanghai, but they would need a visa to escape Austria. By June 1938, 3 mos after Hitler annexed Austria,
Ho issued 300 visas. 4 months later, he issued 1,900 visas. Not all visa holders went to Shanghai, but all were able to use the visas to escape Austria. Some came to the US. At the time when so many nations refused to issue visas to Jews, Ho’s heroic deed saved many lives.
