An amazing analysis of the current #Ukraine️ #war
@kamilkazani takes us back to Cold War and evolution of Russian war machine based on those weapons/tactics.
Question: Will this op prove to be as much a watershed for #Russianarmy as it was for #UkrainianArmedForces in 2014?
In addition, the entire situation raises further questions
1-As mentioned in the tweet above, would this stimulate transformation of military affairs in the #RussianArmy in particular and #RussianArmedForces forces in general?
Especially considering the points @kamilkazani made?
2-Actually, and retrospectively, this raises more questions. And these questions are based on President #Putin own past career in particular and the post #SovietUnion combat experience of the #RussianArmedForces in general

I took an interview with "Talk with World Leaders" of Phoenix TV, and here is the link to the interview. china-embassy.org/dshd/202203/t2…
Whether China-US relations can return to the track of healthy and stable development depends on whether the US side can honor its commitments.
China and the US have maintained close communication on the #UkraineCrisis, and we have common understanding on realizing #ceasefire & peace and providing #HumanitarianAid. But we have different views on how to promote #peacetalks and realize lasting security in Europe.

@ggreenwald Yesterday, I could listen to @OksanaBoyko_RT's 2014 interview on #YouTube with former Australian PM #MalcolmFraser. Today, I can't. His sagacity and courage are sorely needed.#censored #NATO #insiders #LNL #RNBreakfast #mediawatch #abc730 #4corners @phbarratt
@OksanaBoyko_RT @phbarratt In 2015, a year after the coup in Kiev, Tom Switzer, from @RadioNational's #BetweenTheLines, wrote about Malcolm Fraser's views on #NATO, the #US, Russia, Ukraine, Crimea.
Wise observations, still.

@OksanaBoyko_RT @phbarratt @RadioNational @CISOZ @LowyInstitute @RodgerShanahan Last week, anticipating #Youtube would censor RT, which would mean @OksanaBoyko_RT's #WorldsApartRT interview would be unavailable, I transcribed it.

Until the full interview is once again available, I'll tweet some of what the former prime minister said.

#UkraineRussianWar

There are 3 main scenarios how this conflict could evolve going forward. Each of those scenario has certain probabilities of it occurring. Lets examine each one of them and their implications to the world in general:
Scenario 1 - (P:60%) #Ukarine & #Russia agree a ceasefire. Ukraine agrees to cede #Crimea and #Donbass to #Russia. #Putin withdraws #RussianArmy. #Europe over a period of time removes #sanctions. In a year, World becomes normal & everyone lives happily. Best outcome possible.
Scenario 2 - (P:30%) The conflict escalates. stalemate ensues. #Putin reaches #Dniper, takes over Kyiv. #Ukraine is bi-furcated in two - #EastUkraine under #Russian control, #WestUkraine aligned with #NATO. #SanctionsRussiaNow continue for long. #Europe consolidates with #USA

While I continue to hope for regime change in #Russia, I worry about what may come in the weeks ahead absent more Western military intervention. If it comes down to some form of a settlement, a #thread of #maps to contemplate in the days ahead / 1
First, #geopolitics of Russia. Southern and Eastern border protected by mountains. Ural mtns separate Moscow from inner lands. Hard to navigate Northern seas in the Artic. Historically, least protected on Western or S. Western border (Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Nazis) / 2
In thinking about historical Russian view of security on Western borders, consider a “line” from St. Petersburg to Rostov-on-Don during 4 periods: (1) the Russian empire in 1914 /3

Yesterday, a Telegram channel associated with the #WagnerGroup posted a call for recruits:

"The Wagner Philharmonic has decided to take part in the Great World Concert and is holding auditions to select for its touring musical troupe."

A 🧵 on #Wagner & what the post reveals.
1. Some background: Russian #VDV Airborne #Spetsnaz commander Dmitry Utkin adopted the callsign "Wagner" in the first Russian incursion in #Donbas in 2014, a triple entendre indicating his position as "conductor" of off-book scouts and saboteurs now known as the #WagnerGroup.
2. Much has been made of Wagner's affiliation with neo-Nazi movements in #Russia. But the cultural weave of Russian mercenaries is more nuanced.

"Wagner" also refers to the German composer's valorization during the #ThirdReich by Adolf Hitler & Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels.

"This is not the outcome we sought to prevent," said #US State Department spokesman on the current #Ukraine war. Just a slip of the tongue?
Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard might have told the truth: "President Biden could end this crisis and prevent a war with #Russia by doing something very simple, guaranteeing that #Ukraine will not become a member of #NATO, ···
because if #Ukraine became a member of NATO, that would put US and NATO troops directly on the doorstep of Russia, which as Putin has laid out, would undermine their national security interest. Why doesn't President Biden and NATO leaders actually just say that and guarantee it?

What is this #war about, how to make it infeasible for #Russia, and what consequences could it have? Here's what I see.
First let's talk about why the #UkraineInvasion happened. Obviously, none of the things said by #Russia are the true reason.

After all art has been stolen, assets removed, people displaced or killed, and infrastructure destroyed, what is left? Land, buildings, natural resources.
The long term spoils of #Russia's invasion on #Ukraine are the dismantling of the old ruling class and installing of a new one which has sponsored this war. Make no mistake, Putin is representing not his own interests, but the interests of a group of people behind him.

1. #NixonMao #rapprochement 50th ANNIVERSARY: SOME FACTS & LESSONS.
In only 50 years, everything changes. Strategic interests of two great powers aligned then as much as they clash today.
I hate threads but my blog is not out yet: here some disorderly thoughts.
2. In 1972, China needed to avert a terrestrial invasion from #USSR. The #UnitedStates was keen to gain a heavy-weight partner to checkmate #Moscow; but the long-term objective was to bring the most populous country into a rising US-led global economic order for the US to profit
3. In the following decades, the relationship was not void of tensions. However, strategic interests were important enough to save it from #TaiwanRelationsAct, #Reagan anti #communism and support for #Taiwan; #TiananmenSquare; #StraitCrisis 1995-1996; #Belgrade bombing

1. Some rambling thoughts that occur to me as I ponder the #UkraineCrisis: A Geopolitical Tweet Thread of Uncertain Proportions.

I really fail to understand the number of people I see actually defending #Russia re: #Ukraine.
2. #Russia has security concerns. I agree. History and geography necessitates they are going to be wary of being attacked, particularly across the North European Plain.
3. But if you want to keep your neighbors out of a rival alliance, invading, seizing territories, ignoring security guarantees previously given, interfering with their internal affairs, and massing hundreds of thousands of troops on their borders doesn't seem like the best method

Now Out in Paperback! “#China Goes to #Sea: #Maritime Transformation in Comparative Historical Perspective”

amazon.com/China-Goes-Sea…

@NavalWarCollege @ChinaMaritime is proud to publish this new version w/ @NavalInstitute @USNIBooks!

Come for the #maps, stay for the #history...
Honored to have #JonathanSpence’s endorsement:

“The maritime #history of #China has long been a neglected field..China Goes to Sea bring[s] that knowledge-gap to an end..will be an indispensable companion to those readers seeking to understand where China’s navy may be heading.”
As European #naval powers & even the @USNavy struggle with ship numbers, #China has gone to #sea.

Represents the reversal of a great historical trend that began 600 years ago, when China withdrew from the seas & European naval expansion spread Western influence around the globe.

#Taiwan
As #PRC/#CCP power peaks over this decade, #Xi may seek #Taiwan as historic prize.

To protect their security & rules-based order, US/Allies must mobilize immediately to deter aggression.

The mission is vital, the stakes are high, & the clock is ticking.

bit.ly/PLA2027 Image
US/Allies/#Taiwan now face “#DecadeOfDanger” w/ peaking #Xi/#CCP/#PRC as #China has extreme version of “S-Curved #slowdown.”

Xi’s risk acceptance will likely be amplified by his track record of largely-uncountered revisionist actions vs. neighbors & RBO.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Conference of Non-Aligned States in Belgrade 1961, some reflections on the historical research of the Non-Aligned Movement. #otd #ColdWar #GlobalSouth
Undoubtedly and fortunately, historical interest in the NAM has been increasing in recent years. A good overview of the state of research on the 50th anniversary is provided by Mišković et al.(2014) which at the same time gave an important impetus to the research.
Since then, as historical interest in international history, global history, and postcolonial studies has grown, so has interest in the NAM. In this process, research has slowly shifted from the pre-founding and founding history of the NAM in the 1950/60s in three directions:

If you think you know everything you need to know about the Aug 2020 blast that destroyed half of Beirut - a blast that Human Rights Watch in a recent report calls "one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history" - here are some things that might change your mind
Thread
1/ ImageImage
Did you know that an Oct 2020 FBI report concluded only 552 tonnes of ammonium nitrate exploded on 4 Aug 2020, a FIFTH of 2,754 tonnes that arrived on a Russian-leased cargo ship in 2013 that was widely assumed from Day One to be the cause of the blast?

Did you know all those bags of "NITROPRILL HD" seen in the photos of the Beirut warehouse were NOT blasting agents? The HD means "high density" which is the way NH4NO3 is prilled for FERTILIZER! "Experts" like Jeffrey Lewis @ArmsControlWonk were wrong to suggest otherwise.

After the Second World War and the Cold War, there were brief phases in which major crimes were solved by an international criminal justice system.

Today the open rivalry between the great powers prevents independent investigations.
For the first time, politicians and the military could no longer hide their crimes behind abstract "acts of state", but were made individually responsible for their actions.

Had a brain wave / brain fart today - Don't know which?!

Recently re-read x2 #books that seem pretty consequential to modern day news cycles 📚

- #JohnPerkins #ConfessionsOfAnEconomicHitman

- #BillBrowder #RedNotice

Both began their careers for #Boston based consulting co's
#Boston #USA is part of that #IvyLeague playground 🧐

#MIT & #Harvard are in close proximity - Like #Oxford & #Cambridge in the UK (those prestigious institutions also synonymous with producing spy's & leaders)!

Perkins worked for #ChasTMain
Browder for #BostonConsultingGroup
If you look at geo-political history from 1980's - today... These two fella's have really played their part!!

Both books are great by the way... well worth a read!

- #JohnPerkins = #SouthAmerica & #CentralAmerica
- #BillBrowder = #US #Russia #UK #EU ... possibly the world!? 🌐
