Finished up on the 3 day residential with @sounddelivery, learning the ins and outs of sharing your voice as a spokesperson within the media. I’m on this programme because I don’t want other disabled people to feel like they’re in this fight alone… A thread 🧵
When I first got sick at 12, I didn’t know anything about disability as an identity. Invisible chronic illness as a young woman meant I went undiagnosed for 8 years. #EDS#POTS#MCAS
Even when I got my diagnosis, after years of fighting the medical system and going in and out of support groups, the concept of disability as a positive was completely alien. #DisabilityTwitter
It was only when I started learning in earnest about disability within an academic perspective, looking into research and how disability intersects within society, that I began to connect with it as an identity I felt I could claim. #DisabilityPrideMonth
Even though the UK is supposed to subscribe to the social model, which recognises how disabling society/ our environment is, It’s difficult to not see the medical (individual model) ingrained in every aspect of access- My disability, is my fault. #ChangingTheNarrative
But my disability is not my fault. I can’t access and thrive in education, work, hobbies, culture and healthcare because society isn’t accessible to me.
Access to the workplace, helping both disabled people and organisations is my focus as an Inclusive Workplace Expert. Through my work with @sicofficialuk we’re changing this narrative. I’m looking forward to speaking out more about this & the impact of our work. #InclusionForAll
