The vast majority of Chinese who came to Jamaica in the 19th and early 20th centuries were Hakka people from Dongguan, Huiyang, and Bao'an in Guangdong province. #Jamaica
In 1940 all Chinese were barred from Jamaica except diplomats, tourists and students with permits. Three major anti-Chinese riots in Jamaica; 1918, 1936, 1965. Many Chinese-Jamaicans left the island during the 1970s over fear of communism and insecurity as a vulnerable minority.

49 years ago on 18 Jul 1973, US Ambassador to Jamaica Vincent DeRoulet resigned after being declared “persona non grata” by PM Michael Manley. Several controversies in his four years here; most notably that he had made “a deal” with Manley not to intervene in the 1972 elections.

104 years ago 7 Jul 1918, Fong Sue came home in Ewarton to find girlfriend Caroline Lindo with policeman "Pretty Man" McDonald. Fong &friends beat Pretty Man who ran off, hid in nearby bushes. Rumours that he had been killed led to widespread burning &looting of Chinese shops.1/2
