Sir Egerton Richardson (12 Aug 1912– 9 Oct 1988) #Jamaican diplomat, born 113 years ago today, in Saint Catherine. Pivotal figure in #Jamaica’s early post-independence era; played significant role in shaping nation’s foreign policy and advancing global human rights advocacy. Image Egerton Rudolph Richardson began his career as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, contributing to Jamaica’s domestic policy before transitioning to international diplomacy. In 1962, shortly after Independence, he was appointed the country’s first Permanent Representative to the United Nations, serving until 1967 and again from 1981 to 1984. During his tenure, he crafted Jamaica’s initial foreign policy strategy in 1964, embedding human rights principles into international relations, an innovative move for its time. His leadership at the 1968 Tehran World Conference on Human Rights highlighted the link between armed conflict and human dignity, influencing global human rights frameworks and inspiring organizations like Amnesty International to expand their focus on issues like torture.

Beyond the UN, Richardson served as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States and as Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (1969–1972). In 1981, he was elected Chairman of the UN’s Natural Resources Committee, underscoring his global influence. Known for his foresight and dedication, he elevated Jamaica’s role as a leader in human rights advocacy within the Global South.

104 years ago 7 Jul 1918, Fong Sue came home in Ewarton to find girlfriend Caroline Lindo with policeman "Pretty Man" McDonald. Fong &friends beat Pretty Man who ran off, hid in nearby bushes. Rumours that he had been killed led to widespread burning &looting of Chinese shops.1/2 2/2 Chinese shops were looted and burnt in St Catherine, St Ann, St Mary and Clarendon. 1,000 people participated, 452 were arrested, and 300 sentenced to one year at hard labour.
