Oh you think that aminulrasyid case was horrific? Tak dengar lagi cerita 3 teens gunned down in cold blood, and the attempts to cover it up?
We're paying twice - to fund the cops, and to pay for damages.
"After almost 11 years, the families of the victims of the Glenmarie shooting finally receive a modicum of justice for the.. loss that they had to endure due to the actions of the police.."
The post-mortem report revealed that the police shot them at close range.
“The report also indicates that Shamil was shot on the forehead at a 45-degree angle. That can only happen if the boy was kneeling when he was gunned down," he said.
Yes, there is good reason to be wary of overreach.
I think I still my draft notes from putting together the 2010 SUARAM Human Rights Report. Boleh saja tengok berapa banyak kes abuse of power by cops and other enforcement agencies, as well as deaths in custody.
Sebab tu la aku geli sikit tengok some HCPs talk out of their ass.
Naive, clueless atau wilfully ignorant?
Not my intent to sensationalise police violence, tapi lepas tengok how "data & science" peeps resorted to maudlin sentimentality & religious appeals in what is a clear cut public health issue, aku pun bengang lah.
To be honest, handling these cases has traumatised me a bit. I wasn't the first point of contact with victims' families, but I was aware of this stuff back then.
I kinda wish that CSOs who deal with traumatised populations would spend on PFA and mental health support for staff.
Mental health support wasn't a thing back then, but it is now, and I think CSOs should be more progressive and open to ideas of a mentally healthy workplace.
2010 was the year I broke down and finally had to see a psy doc. It wasn't fun. Still isn't.
To add, as rightfully pointed out by @chillasaurusx, we actually paid thrice. 1. We pay for the cops to do "their jobs" 2. We end up paying for damages in the court case 3. We pay with the loss of life and future potential
Quite sure this wasn't an easy story to write, right @sadhosays ?
I can understand that some of the "Saya seorang DOKTOR" group are disappointed with the delay of the GEG legislation, and I can understand why.
I too, have been disappointed & frustrated by delays in progressive legal reform (S 309 Penal Code, Akta OKU et al).
But..
..please don't take this as a rejection of the GEG. A lot of people want this, including me.
But we need to make sure that any legislation cannot be abuse, not because of some imaginary threat, but because our enforcement agencies have a HISTORY of abusing laws & the vulnerable.
Maybe take some time to reflect and understand some of the criticism? Maybe it will help you become better advocates and allies? Learn to be less antagonistic and dismissive?
