Well, having supported many programs in academia as a librarian & looking at career paths, it seems I have to go back to school to work in the fields for I educated & supported for many years. At least I can be put in advanced standing due to my undergrad, so here’s the vote:
Fun thing about being a librarian is that is truly a Jack/Jill of all Trades kind of work. I am a master of information, but beyond that… I’m not considered qualified enough for much else & overqualified for everything else. So, how does one overcome this career conundrum?
I am still trying to find ways to be the ultimate worker that I am but now to find a new niche to do that within is the challenge. I grew up nursing & educating, went to school to harness information, & worked a lot along the way, confirming I can do a great many things.
The reality of librarianship is an interesting landscape indeed. Master of information & library studies : the ultimate background career path #medlibs#librarianship
I am grateful to have given back to education, medical, health and nursing as a librarian given my lived experiences in hospitals, school and living with disabilities.
I thought about going back for my doctorate but I would end up with the same base conundrum of that "essential" degree. My own experiences in the work world versus academia has very much influenced the advise I give in career consults.

My sentences, wording, has been joked by those who don’t understand. I read books to learn spoken language & only heard those around me in my limited capacity. So I speak oddly. I say things like:
How are you fairing?
That makes my heart feel….
The Whidden Hall resident advisor the year I was there was quite amused by my phrasing, assuming it was because I was a “newbie” (from New Brunswick, living in Ontario). But it was more than that and I was happy to watch her amusement in my phrasing.
Wording & social interactions is an interesting level of observation to me. To word properly, to say it at the right sound level, using appropriate tone, just in case. Then reevaluate it all later to learn better for next time. Imagine doing all that in English & French. Haha
Okay, so todays webinar really inspired me… to provide tangible workshops for those with disabilities that lends to more practical than theoretical applications. I feel a deep dive coming on to launch a workshop asap.
When designing a workshop one of the touchy points aside from picking content & platform is how much to charge. This one is a stinker as I want my workshops to be accessible, which includes affordability - especially if I’m targeting groups like parents & those with disabilities.
I don’t want to create tiered systems where I charge health professionals & educators one rate and everyone else another as… it may limit access.
Saturday night Special Interest deep dive: law history around shared risk pension in New Brunswick. It certainly is interesting!
So, if I am reading all this correctly, the province has been pushing shared risk pension for ten years with great pushback to a point where they got sneaky and hoodwinked a few unions into splitting pensions but treating them all as shared risk pension portfolios.
In the original act, there were flimsy mechanisms to push pension changes without consent. There must be accountability mechanisms otherwise there is nothing shared about this at all. In defined benefits, there was an element of being cared for by the pension super.
Be an invited observer, advisor and party favour creator (ie jewellery repurposing/making, tarot pulls, etc) maker to entrepreneurial events, especially in the more granola industries. I pictured being a hit with mompreneur groups.
Could I still do this? I don’t know. Well, I can have hand sanitizer at my station for before and after each person. Well, I can wear a mask (just might not be able to tell a word you say) & social distance reasonably well.
But… fear, bubbles, worry, funds, etc. Timing. Safety.
Either way, it’s time to share what I was going to do so I can transform the ideas into what I will be doing in this uncertain world that limits human interaction. Online is wonderful… that said, I am a needle in a virtual haystack. In person still leaves a better impression.
Rental increases opinion:
Most lower costing rentals belong to landlords that have been in the business so long that they’ve paid off their mortgages & are ready to retire.
New landlords have mortgages & upgrades.
The costs are apparently being downloaded to tenants. 😕
I say this to anyone buying rental units please do your homework!
Find out:
- current rental rates being charged
- length of tenancies
- upgrades history
- mortgage cost implications on renters
- low income thresholds
- local job markets
