How I was able to learn data science without having a laptop?
When I decided to do this(data science), the major limitation for me was not having a laptop.
On some days I would cry and feel frustrated because I didn’t have one and It was slowing me down.
A Long Thread!!!
The major breakthrough for me was @ingressive4good#I4GDatacamp scholarship. I downloaded the Datacamp app on the day I applied for the scholarship, this was like some days before the closing date.
Finding out I could code and do exercise on the app was the drive I needed to continue. On some occasions I would switch my phone to desktop version, so it feels like I am using a laptop.
With coursera, it wasn’t quite easy for me because of all the things I needed to download.
My first dashboard is a mess, I feel so embarrassed anytime I see it but I won’t delete it because YES, there is always room for growth and improvement. The second I did was the Nobel Prize analysis and someone commented that day that I had copied and it wasn’t original,
I felt bad because truthfully, I had gotten the inspiration from seeing others, but in Maraji’s Voice “Even though, Even though”
If e easy to copy, why you sef no copy.💁♀️
But I felt like a fraud sha..
I started doubting my self and looking for ways to prove myself. I needed another project and I didn’t want to work on a popular dataset.
When I started thinking of a project, I knew I didn’t want something boring and I wanted to do something I loved and could explain even without looking at my dashboard. I also wanted to do something, even non-data persons could relate to.
I also kept the business problem I was trying to solve in mind. RHOL was trending as at that time and I said why not?
For my RHOL project, I scraped the tweets in one night and built the dashboard on another night because I didn’t have a laptop to lazy about, every time counted.
I remember after almost been done with building the dashboard, I started from scratch again because I didn’t agree with fonts, layout and color, and my sister asked ‘if na ment’ 😂. I am not a perfectionist but when it comes to dashboards, I always want it to look great.
I built the second one and fonts refused to agree with me, I later found out why though. I was already tired because that meant spending another night on this and I had other stuffs waiting.
I posted it here and I can say that, the project is a turning point for me in my career.
For me my Passion was greater than my Limitation.
I know you can say it’s easy for me because, I had someone to borrow laptop from..start with your phone, you can do so much with it.
One day I will tell the story of how I almost took a learn data science in 10 hours course on YouTube because of no laptop 😂😂
There are lots of laptop grants online, you won’t get it if you can’t show workings.
Prior to winning a laptop from 14G, I had applied for many others and didn’t get it but I didn’t stop.
People will only help you, if they can see what you have done or what you can do or how much you are trying to do, So I have learnt on this space.
If you read up to this point…You are resilient..Thank you for taking out time to read.❤️❤️

Intentionality starts from writing down and making plain your goals and how you tend to achieve them.
In my case, I wrote down the goals(things I needed to learn) but I didn’t write down a plan.
I’ve been able to achieve quite a number on that list, even though I am jumping because I didn’t have a plan. This month I am re-strategizing. I would focus on finishing all I have not done. Certifications next, Portfolio after. It might take more than a month, slowly but surely.
If you are new to data science or data analytics, either you want to start this journey, or you have started already and you don’t have a roadmap, I will advise you make one and map out plans on achieving it.
It will serve as a guide and motivation for you to keep going.
It takes a lot of mental effort to post a project or achievement on this space. For someone who has had her own fair share of anxiety issues, it takes extra mental effort. If someone posts a dashboard, a project or an achievement and you cannot criticize constructively…
Please keep your comment to your self.
Nigeria is happening to everyone so please be kind.
Also, if you can’t celebrate with people, don’t spread your negative energy, no matter how difficult it is, keep it to yourself.
Don’t be the reason someone commits suicide.
Also, when you ask someone a question and they don’t respond, don’t feel entitled, you did not subscribe for them and you don’t even know if they are online to respond. I know how bad I feel when I can’t respond to everyone because I don’t have the time but I still try my best.
The messages in my DM are a lot and very similar. It will take a while to answer everyone so….
I would be answering all under this THREAD.
These are the FAQs:
Q1: I want to be a Data scientist/ Analyst, how do I start?
Answer: If you are looking to become a Data Scientist, start with the IBM DATA SCIENCE COURSE ON COURSERA. If you are looking to be a Data Analyst, start with GOOGLE DATA ANALYTICS COURSE ON COURSERA. Financial aid is available for both.
Q2: What courses did you take?
Answer: I started with the IBM Data Science Professional certification course on coursera, I later took python for data science on Datacamp, Data communication concept on Datacamp, SQL Fundamentals on Datacamp.
It was on this day, Four months ago, that I started picked up the IBM Data Science Course on Coursera. A couple of weeks later, I won the #I4GDATACAMP scholarship.
When i started this journey, I wasn't even certain of Day 1. I put God first and I gave it my all.
Four months of consistency, Four months of hardwork and four months of putting GOD first.
When people say you can't pivot in six months, it was too scary because I know I get bored easily. I focused on learning the basics.
The goal was to constantly learn for six months, then start applying for jobs.
