@GicAriana A subset of NATO members could do that , and I’d welcome that but #NATO itself couldn’t do that as it is exclusively defensive for members.

@GicAriana The one exception was Kosovo and that’s because it was a UN Security Council Resolution that basically contracted NATO as the enforcer. But the security council isn’t going to make such a resolution with Russia being on it.

@GicAriana So asking NATO to do these things is basically asking all members of NATO to ratify a rewriting of the treaty to enable it. And that’s not going to happen , especially not in a timely fashion.

@GicAriana You could ask say Poland and/or UK / US to do such a no fly zone , but then it wouldn’t be NATO And then an bilateral escalation between Russia and one of those countries wouldn’t require NATO members to defend those countries

@GicAriana For example if POLAND implemented the No-fly zone and shot down some Russian Jets, then Russian invaded Poland , NATO Would no longer be obliged to defend Poland from Russia.

@GicAriana So Eastern European countries are scared to go it alone in that Case , and the US won’t do so for not wanting to be directly drawn into a war with Russia. It’s a sucky set of circumstances but it is the state of things.

@GicAriana Just as the UK gave its nuclear umbrella and security guarantees to Finland prior to its NATO application independently from NATO, its a shame the U.S./UK didn’t do that for Ukraine prior to Feb 23

@GicAriana Along the lines with other modern weapons systems the US can easily I’d they choose five Ukraine anti-aircraft systems that woudl@enable Ukraine to at least partially close the skies themselves…..

@GicAriana As as such that’s something I’d recommend people putting more serious political effort into trying to achieve than trying to get NATO to create a No-fly zone.

@GicAriana I do see a future in the near future though where Ukraine is increasing enabled to gain air supremacy , with an Air Force bolstered by more airframes + anti air systems supplied by NATO countries + electronic warfare tech against Russian s300/s400
