OUR LADY OF VICTORY

On 7 October, 1571, the Holy League defeated the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto.

The League was a coalition of Catholic states arranged by Pope Pius V.

It comprised of the Spanish Empire, the Papal States, the Republic of Venice, the Republic of
Genoa, and other Italian states.

At the time, Continental Europe was at threat of conquest by the Ottoman Empire.

The Turks, led by Suleiman the Magnificent, had ravaged the Eastern Mediterranean for decades, and Christian Europe deemed their armies unbeatable and invincible.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Holy League was fighting a religious war with the Protestant Reformers.

Europe was in danger of being overrun.

Pope Pius V arranged the coalition and blessed their banner; a flag bearing the crucified Christ.

He appointed a commander and
blessed the soldiers and sailors.

65,000 men sailed out to fight the Ottomans, with more than 200 ships.

On the eve of the battle, the Catholics devoted the battle to the Virgin Mary.

The next morning, the Sacrament was administered, and the battle began, on sight of the Turks
It was the largest naval battle in Europe, since Classical Antiquity.

It also had as much value as the Battle of Salamis, in 306 BC.

Then, the Greeks had defeated the Persians in a naval battle, preventing the influence of Oriental culture in Europe.

If the Turks won Lepanto,
Christianity was under direct threat of extinction.

So, both sides fought; 120,000+ men killing themselves on wobbly boats.

Ultimately, the Holy League prevailed, and drove back the enemy.

It was a great victory.

Pope Pius V instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory, whose
intercession the victory was attributed to.

The Ottoman Empire suffered its first defeat in a hundred years, and never took the western Mediterranean.

The triumph is now celebrated as the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Proudly Catholic.

ELEMENT 101 [Urban Fantasy]

My eyes were shut but sleep was far from me.

I had spent the last month training on how to control animals.

It had seemed easy at first.

"You just need to form a connection with the creature," the magic instructor had taught, "then say the spell."
Learning magic had turned out to be more difficult than astrophysics.

But that's not what my cousin had said when my magical affinity was discovered. In fact, she had assured me it would be a walk in a park.

I just needed to imagine what I wanted, and it would be so.

Yet, here
I was memorising spells in Latin.

The first year at Pen Titan's College of Hidden Arts had featured introductory courses to each branch of the arts.

January had been Latin Language 101.

February was meditation training.

April and May were Transmutation 101.

June; Telepathy.

We've been hearing about women saying men harrass them with their eyes.

That is, staring lustfully.

Then in the CS, you have women who condemn the action as a crime punishable by three months in jail.

Well, I don't know how it looks to women, and I'm sure other men don't.
But, it is within man's nature to "stare" at "hot" women.

It's already a law that when a woman passes by a man, they turn to look at her behind.

When thighs are bared out, cleavages are displayed, and beauty is generally showcased, men must look.

And women love the attention.
So, who are the women that complain of this?

Then in school, we heard stories of groups of girls who'd return from lectures, and one would complain about how no guy approached her.

Seemed false, but it was true.

Men stare, and women love the stares.

Unless you're not

Someone tweeted about how his female friend blocked him on the orders of her boyfriend.

According to him, they're just friends. He then proceeded to call the guy "insecure".

Well, it was on this same Twitter that a guy posted a picture with his lecturer's daughter, then went
ahead to say he was dickmatising her in the comment section.

Her bf saw the tweets and broke up with her.

"Just a friend" then came back here to accuse the guy of being "insecure" over a harmless friendship.

It's also on this same Twitter we have guys who lament how their
girlfriend's "besties" and "just a friend" snatched them; some even got sudden wedding invites.

One thing about Twitter is people don't post the complete stories here.

There are insecure people, but what if the guy is just protecting his relationship?

What if they don't act

Religion vs Superstition.

The importance of organized religion was it gave people a set of rules to guide their superstition.

Humans are naturally superstitious. Most tend to believe in a supernatural existence beyond the natural.
Hunters assumed they were less successful in the forest one day than the other day, because they failed to offer sacrifices to the god of the woods.

If a king snatched a man's wife, and a drought occured the following year, it was assumed that the gods disliked the act.
And so, wife snatching was synonymous to droughts.

Every random occurrence would lead to beliefs which would become law.

At times, they were poorly established, and cost the lives of many, both humans and animals.

The ancient Romans would give grains to hens before battles.

Can a Prostitute make a Good Wife?

Some would argue that one's "profession" doesn't decide if they are good or bad people.

They even go as far as saying that, "non-prostitutes" usually possess darker hearts and worse characters than prostitutes.

A good person is a good person.
However, a good woman doesn't exactly translate to a good wife.

"A woman can be a good person, and still be a bad wife to you."
@jon_d_doe

A prostitute can respect her elders overwhelmingly.

She can also be charitable, and offer to assist the less-privileged with her money.
She can be always ready to settle disputes, and promote peace among others.

She could condemn theft, fraud, and murder.

These are some of the qualities of a good person, and as such, said prostitute would be a good woman.

But, can she really be a good wife?

THE AUGUST PRESENT [Crime/Mystery]

Mr John Francis was a sad man.

The permanent scowl etched on his face rendered him unapproachable, and his work colleagues who managed to interact with him, did so only because of his esteemed position in the company.
Four months ago, Mr John had been one of the brightest HR managers in the industry, and his adept skill at staff recruitment and maintenance drove revenue numbers to dizzying highs.

The junior employees loved him, and his superiors were indebted to him.
There were genuine hopes he would make the board. And his ambition assured it.

Unfortunately, Mr John experienced an event that destroyed his life.

He caught his wife cheating on him.

She had been his world, motivation, and only love.

But she betrayed his sacrifices.
