A year ago, @Jess5th and I launched #RainbowSummer. Today, we wrapped year 2 AND our new pub, "Chasing Rainbows in Stormy Weather: Reading and Discussing LGBTQ+ YAL as Liberatory Professional Development..." dropped in English Leadership Quarterly! library.ncte.org/journals/elq/i…
Sure, @Jess5th and I have our name on the doc, but #RainbowSummer wouldn't be anything without our four amazing youth interns/facilitators. They are the soul and true genius behind this idea and I'm so grateful I've gotten to share space with them during the past two summers.
Also, shout out to the 200+ educators and caregivers who have engaged in #RainbowSummer over the past two summers. AND BIG BIG THANKS to the authors and special guests who've joined our community to provide perspective and brilliant insights.
lastly, anything I get to do with @Jess5th is a dream come true – this article included. I'm so happy to call her my friend and collaborator. I so appreciate the opportunity to co-write this piece with you, Jess (thanks to ELQ editor, @CodyMillerELA and @ncte).

it is that time of the year again – teachers are planning ice breakers, introductory activities, and making first-day slide decks. here are some reminders from your favorite non-binary teacher-scholar-friend.
1. When introducing yourself to students, use your pronouns (looking at your cisgender folks). Using your pronouns in your intro signals you have an awareness of gender diversity and establishes you as a potentially safe-ish space for trans/gender non-conforming (GNC) folks.
1A. I also want to acknowledge that in some places it is against the rules to introduce yourself using pronouns. This is ridiculous and I think you should find ways to incorporate it anyway. We need/want allies in the classroom so please don't get fired on the first day though.
With less than a month until school starts, Columbus City Schools has left the bargaining table. It seems likely that teachers will strike. More than two years into a pandemic and teachers are still fighting to get kids what they deserve. Here's some of what @ColumbusEA wants –
According to @ColumbusEA, there's no difference in cost for Columbus City Schools so what's the deal? Smaller class sizes benefit kids' differentiated needs in learning spaces, y'all.
2. #ColumbusStudentsDeserve full-time art, music, and physical education teachers at the elementary level
Y'all better stop playing with these electives. Kids deserve to run, sing, create, and play with teachers who are in schools full-time!
I think it’s so funny that these people think that banning these terms will stop us from using the theory subversively in curriculum and classrooms.
last week, my friend told me about a lesson on reparations she created using a rock collection metaphor (and never mentioning race). and y’all think banned “critical race theory” will stop us from teaching the truth?!
