1/n Thread: In Defense of a Member of the Fraternity 1. As a #teacher, I teach students from different age groups. Some will use their interactions to share their frustrations, love stories and more. I do Not Judge the student and most definitely not the parents.
2/n The parent in question seems to have found the teacher's attire on a public platform objectionable. Point noted. What is unjustified is the 'reaction'. At 18, young adults are exploring their own sexuality gender irrespective. Instead of that sharp reaction...
3/n Had the parent sat the young man down and told him to respect his teacher's privacy, it would have taught the 18 yr old respect.
Instead you have a parent already rating, berating and judging the teacher for something she doesn't owe anyone an explanation.
4/n That said, Do I support the teacher's absolute freedom? No. Even the Constitution doesn't give anyone absolute freedom. I have 2 Instagram profiles- a professional public profile and a more private profile that is restricted to immediate family and friends.
5/n Had the teacher been a little more mindful of the fact that she is training young people and perhaps should lock her profile, that may have helped. Even so...
For those judging the teacher - Stop
For those judging the parent - Stop
For those judging the 18 yr old - Stop
6/n This is an unfortunate incident with multiple moral underpinnings and social lessons. If we learn from it, it would be infinitely better than judging any of the characters in this scenario
7/n I am however concerned with the impulsive reaction of the university to terminate the professor instead of giving her a fair hearing and I do hope that they re-think their decision if they haven't already.
End.
