Politicians ratcheting up the violent rhetoric know what will happen...

...because most have had their own security scares over the years.

It's awful. For a whole family.

Still, they've decided to inflict it on their colleagues.

Ugly stuff.
2/ Sure, we've seen a loss of civility in politics.

But legislators playing with rhetoric that will turn colleagues & friends into targets for violence is next level.

It is profoundly morally disappointing.
3/ In the run-up to #Jan6th politicians ratcheted up the incitement.

Just words, right?

And then it happened.

Remember how sobered, traumatized & chastened lawmakers were that evening?

Yet, here we are again.
4/ I am personally disappointed by the staffers counseling their bosses that incitement is the correct political choice.

What notion of service to country is this?

Was this what they went to Washington to do?

It's shameful. And they know better.
5/ Dear staffer/member: you can't get to your office without passing security.

Officers at the checkpoints put themselves at risk to protect you & your colleagues.

Some know you by name.

How can you walk past them, then sit down & tweet incitement?
6/ We all know what happens next with violent rhetoric.

Someone is going to get killed.

You've been scammed. That paid #VPN doesn't stop:

❌hackers
❌identity theft
❌big tech from tracking you, etc.

The VPN industry is built on deceptive marketing.

This is an open secret, but new research is 👇giving us the stark numbers.
2/ It gets worse. Not only is the consumer #VPN industry carpet-bombing podcasts & YouTube vids with misleading ads...

But #BigVPN has established a whole rating & review ecosystem built around hidden conflicts of interest.
3/ We all know a #VPN can unblock content & maybe get around censorship...

But the consumer #VPN industry wants you to believe that magic security & privacy things happen when your internet connection runs through their servers.

They don't.

BREAKING: 🇬🇷Greek intelligence chief quits amidst expanding mercenary spyware scandal.

He'd admitted the targeting of journalist @nasoskook.

Also, article notes: top aide to the Prime Minister resigned (without further details)

By @ggeopo & @tagaris

2/ This is the *second* resignation of an 🇪🇺EU intel chief due to a mercenary spyware scandal this year.

Countries w/recent scandals:

🇭🇺 Hungary
🇵🇱 Poland
🇪🇸 Spain
🇬🇷 Greece

The European Union has an obvious problem.
The 🇪🇺EU led the world w/privacy regulation...

But has been slow to address spyware, despite threat to EU citizens' fundamental rights.

Does unwillingness to confront actions by member states' security services play a role?

Whatever the route, result = harms + embarrassments.

"Alex Jones made a mistake, he trusted the wrong people...he was at a difficult moment in his life"

-Jones' lawyer just now, pushing a large rock up a long hill.
"when he goes on not that many people listen...this is not the New York Times...this is a talk show in Austin Texas"

-Alex Jones' lawyer...

You have to wonder if this kind of talk costs Alex blood.
“Some one or some thing tried to weaponize [the parents’] grief”

Alex Jones' lawyer tries to dip the jury's collective toes into conspiracy-thinking.

Watching Alex Jones unable to bluster & bully his way out of a fib is the most satisfying bit of justice you'll see this week.

Alex Jones, blocked from verbally assaulting truth, is cut down to a nervous nub of grift.

The last time I saw him this small was Jan6th. He'd realized that, after egging on the crowd, things were getting out of hand.

And he slunk away.
Alex Jones' time on the stand was fascinating.

-He couldn't shout longer & louder.
-His followers couldn't harass from the gallery.
-And his manhood pill sales didn't buy a Perry Mason.

When he's alone & faced with consequences, the man behind the curtain is a bit of a joke.

Tobacco companies found researchers willing to muddy the smoking -> cancer link.

Some did it for the money.

Ideology played a role, too.

As the political stakes of cybersecurity research keep growing, we should expect all of this.

By @juliaoftoronto vox.com/2015/3/21/8267… Most people assume this is just a story about people being c
2/ The playbook I'm expecting is for PR / crisis communications companies to start hiring credentialed & 'respected' researchers to lend their names to alternate-narratives of inconvenient cybersecurity incidents & hacks.

Goal: divide & politicize the field.
3/ On the political side, we've had enough recent cybersecurity-related incidents in the US alone around elections that it's surprising to me that more credentialed-but-ideologically-driven people haven't started playing dirty.

I just testified to @HouseIntel that the mercenary spyware industry undermines 🇺🇸national security.

And fuels human rights abuses.

The technology is proliferating rapidly, and I urged Congress to take action before more harm is done

Beside me: @ShaneHuntley & @ckanimba 1/
2/ "I want to make it so you really think twice about accepting a job with someone like NSO ...and you do something more productive with your life.

-@ShaneHuntley from @Google TAG being blunt about the need to discourage tech talent from heading to mercenary spyware companies.
3/ @ckanimba told a visibly moved @HouseIntel committee how her father Paul Rusesabagina, hero of Hotel Rwanda, was kidnapped.

And how she, a US Citizen, was infected with Pegasus when she began campaigning for his release.
