Current debate over #visabanforrussians - whether it unduly victimizes "good π·πΊ" & unjustly imposes collective responsibility, or whether it is warranted cuz russians do in fact bear collective responsibility for their govt action - echos a similar debate from early 1990s. A π§΅1/
In late 1980s-early 1990s in the Baltic states push for indepdence from USSR was supported by some "good" russians (who supported Baltic popular fronts) and opposed by other russians (who supported pro-USSR "Interfronts"). 2/
Once πͺπͺ π±π» π±πΉ gained independence they instituted citizenship laws that excluded from citizenship many local russians. Who - together with russian liberals in Moscow - became very upset at this "unjust" policy. 3/
While russian liberals argued that they were good since (some of) them supported Baltic independence, Balts claimed that (most) russians did not renounce their imperial identity, were a potential threat to the newly independent state's independence, and had to earn citizenship 4/
2 be fair & more specific, πͺπͺ&π±πΉ (but not π±π») early laws had clauses allowing russians who supported independence before Soviet collapse to gain citizenship easier. But back to the actual debate. 5/
Were π·πΊs unjustly victimized by Baltic citizenship laws? After all many were sent there by Soviet state without their consent & were not direct participant in repressions of 1930s-1950s. Weren't they just victims of Soviet regime like anti-war russians are in Putin's π·πΊtoday? 6/
Yes & no - and here come echos 2 current visa ban debate. (Vast majority of) russians don't want 2 accept collective responsibility 4 murderous actions & colonial oppression of regimes were they r main group. It was so in USSR, and is so now in π·πΊ - even if it's "complicated" 7/
USSR was a comminist but also π·πΊ empire were russians were politically (though not institutionally) privileged group - closest to Soviet ideal, only group enjoying cultural rights like native lang education thru the whole country, occupying top positions in the party etc. 8/
But there was no decolonization of hearts & minds of russians in π·πΊ after 1991. Russians didn't want 2 feel responsibility 4 mass oppression of Balts, Ukrainians & other minorities by Soviet state. Instead they cast themselves as equal (if not greater) victim of Soviet regime 9/
The compex truth is that while russians were victims of soviet regime, they were also main privileged group then (& under tsarism). Facing this reality - like white Americans who acknowledge their "white priviege" even if their ancestors were not slave holders - is possible 10/
But it's a conscious choice. Once this choice is made & becomes starting point, u can then ponder & debate extent of responsibility (2go with (imperfect) US analogy, r poor whites benefiting from white privilege as much as rich whites? what abt white immigrants who r othered 11/
Had russians taken collective responsibility for imperial & Soviet colonization crimes & then debated its extent & complexities π·πΊ likely would have been a different state now 12/
By the same token, if russians today were 2 take responsibility 4 murderous war π·πΊ regime unleashed in their name (yes, Germany's analogy applies here) they can then debate w/others appropriate extent & forms of this responsibility. But instead we (primarily) see self-pity 13/
π·πΊ missed opportunity 2 decolonize their psyche & identity & build post-Soviet π·πΊ into a "normal country" - still plenty big but minding its business in its international borders - in 1991. Now is another chance. Don't blow it, "good Russians." /End
If πΊπ¦ consults with πΊπΈ/NATO on use of long-range weapons, hit on Crimean air base has another implication: the west is not buying π·πΊ bs that Crimea is π·πΊ proper. It's not. It's illegally annexed territory, "referendum" & formalization of annexation notwithstanding. And so...1/
π·πΊ bluff, gaslighting & threats 2 go nuclear r exposed 4 what they r - bs, or, in Russian, ΠΏΠΎΠ½ΡΡ. 4π·πΊ it's a smart move 2 annex territory (hence "referendum" plans 4 Kherson & Zaporizhzhia) & then claim that nuclear umbrella will extend 2 these territories cuz they're nowπ·πΊ 2/
but this bluff only works if west buys it. Crimea strike shows that it (rightly) doesn't (πΊπ¦ of course doesn't buy it). Instead of nuking us all π·πΊ denies the very fact of attack since it shows its weakness. 3/
When applying for tourist visa thereβs presumption of intent to immigrate & applicant needs to prove they donβt have this intent. There can be (quite reasonable) presumption that π·πΊ visa applicants are pro-war/Putin & requirent to rebut this presumption to get EU visa. Then 1/
Those Russians in the EU who display war symbols & harass πΊπ¦ refugees should be promptly deported for violating visa issuing conditions. This is not discrimination for βpolitical opinionβ but protection from re-victimization of already victimized πΊπ¦ refugees. 2/
More broadly EU states can ban displays of support of Russian war of imperialist conquest & its leaders, like they do with Nazi symbols & ideology. 3/
This utterly bizzare Victory Day performance from Russia reminded me of something we had in high school in late Sovier era - agitbrigada (agitation, or propaganda brigade). A short π§΅
Agitbrigade's purpose was to put on a musical theater performance in school auditorium for - yes, you guessed it - Victory day. Must have been 1985 (40 yrs anniversary). Spots in agitbrigada were highly thought. But not due to high degree of patriotism. 2/
Agitbrigada participants got to skip classes for rehearsals. How cool was that. But not just anyone could join. Some musical talent was required. Ouch for me - zero singing skills but I wanted in. 3/
How do I say it clearly. Putin already believes the west is out to get him and always was. This was the thrust of his crazy pre-invasion speech. Many ppl in π·πΊ believe this too - that they are not fighting war against πΊπ¦ but war to defend Russia. Crazy but true. 1/
2/ so what Lindsay Graham said, βundiplomaticβ as it is, doesnβt change much. Putin said - read his speech - that even western advisors on anticorruption reforms were proof that US is masterminding against π·πΊ and it was just a matter of time before it struck π·πΊ by way of πΊπ¦
3/ War made no sense, UπΊπ¦ was not going to attack π·πΊ or Donbas, NATO was not going to attack π·πΊ, NATO was not going yo admit πΊπ¦ and yet he started this crazy war.
