Saw few tweets mentioning that the God & Goddess playing Chess in the picture. In fact they are playing the game of dice (Thaayam in Tamil). The story was illustrated in Skanda Purana. One day Narada visits Kailasa & says he wants to see the game of dice to be played between

Siva & Parvathi. After refusing initially, Parvati agrees. In the first game Siva wins & Narada mocks at Parvati. Enraged, she starts playing again asking what is the wager for the game. Siva agrees to bet his jewels & crescent moon on his head. This time Parvati wins but Siva

refuses to part with what he had agreed. She forcefully takes them & puts the crescent on her head. The artist beautifully brought this scene here where one can see Parvati arguing to get the rest of the jewels from Siva, the worried face of Ganas & swami thinking what to do next

On the occasion of the Birthday of great emperor Sri Rajendra Chola, let’s look at one of the grants given by him, the Karandai Copper Plates. The plates were found in Karandai near Thanjavur & hence the name. This is the second largest copper plate grant of Cholas

with 57 plates in the set. Of these 30 plates are written in Sanskrit covering the genealogy of Cholas, 22 plates in Tamil covering the details of the grant and the rest of them contain the names of the donees. The seal of the Plates contain the Chola symbol, Tiger in seated form

Rajendra’s order is written using Grantha around the margin

Rajad-Rajanya-makuta-sreni-ratneshu-sasanam
Etad-Rajendra-cholaysa parakesarivarmmanah

The occasion in which the order was given is interesting to note. On the 8th year of his reign, rajendra was visiting Chidambaram

The grant made by Arikesari Parankusa Maravarman, none other than the Nindra Seer Nedimaran, one of the Nayanmars.

Inscribed in Grantha & Vattezhuthu, the inscription has details about the Tsunami faced by Pandya kingdom and how the Pandya king saved the citizens.

It also speaks about Pandya participation in Mahabharata war. It then eulogises Maravarma Pandyas as the one who made a number of Sivalayas including the Arikesari Eswaram temple in Kalakkudi (near Ukkiran kottai). This reinforces the fact mentioned in Periyapuranam that
