1/ The term “mamlachti” (adj.) is derived from the word “mamlacha” (kingdom) and eludes English equivalents. “Mamlachtiyut” (noun) was a neologism coined by David Ben-Gurion,
2/ ...to describe the challenge of bringing all the different factions of the Jewish population in Palestine under the rule of a unified Israeli government that will know how to wield sovereign power effectively and responsibly.
3/ The term has variously been translated as “etatism,” “civic mindedness," and “acting sovereign-like.” Over the years, the term gained particular currency in religious Zionist circles, becoming shorthand for the position that...
4/ ...reconciles the modern secularist state of Israel with Biblical aspirations and (for some) messianic promises. Hence, “anti-mamlachtiut” denotes a radical break with the state, and for the most extremist circles also an intense hostility toward it.
5/ Most recently, “anti-mamlachtiyut” has been used to describe the populist politics espoused by Netanyahu. By contrast, “mamlachti” is invoked as a counter to (and to decry) those who malign the institutions of the state, esp. its judicial & democratic ones.
