Tracking thread on rain/drought in Europe.

Last three days have seen some, which is very welcome to address a 500 year drought. I posted the thread below on Aug 14th when rain finally came to Bretagne, France.

#ClimateChangeNow Thread
Its worth pointing out that an extreme drought in Europe is not as bad as elsewhere in the world. Europe is used to getting lots of rain, and will likely continue to do so - and it has good reservoirs to deal with drought - this one is basically from June.
This thread consists mostly of satellite imagery over the past three days + some forecast data images which help explain what is going on. But not too many. And it looks at water transport from the Nth Atl & the West African Monsoon.

Day 1. 13-14 August - East NATL
Day 1. 13-14 August - Western Europe
Day 1. 13-14 August - Western Sahara

In a sense the 1st and 3rd images can be seen as the causation for the 2nd one - you can see the visible atmospheric water flows (Note: there are also invisible ones).
Here's the first forecast data set. Precipitable water - Atmospheric water over Europe 14th-19th August (3 days forecast)
Day 2 of rain 14-15 August. Again we start in the Eastern North Atlantic where the lows are obstructing dry air from moving in. Theres also a 2nd atmospheric river over Bretagne.

The atmospheric river running WNW over Morocco is feeding the 2nd low over E.Eur.

East NATL
Day 2 (yesterday). 14-15 August - Western Europe

Neither low pressure system is making much of a go of forming into storm - but there are lots of thunderstorms.
Day 2 (yesterday). 14-15 August - Western Sahara.

The area of Atlantic convection which was just east of Senegal before powering one of atmospheric rivers which brought rains to France at the weekend is now mainly on an Italian Adriatic trajectory.
These three foreacasts (14/15/16 Aug) are all for Friday 19th Aug. The lows are expected to be pushed East - but not very fast.
Day 3 of rain 14-15 August: The low over the Bay of Biscay is doing a lot of work trying to form a circulation but thee wind from the south is blowing it north and keeping it ragged. This it evening it is bringing more rain to Galicia & Compostela in NW Spain (the wettest part).
Day 3 (last night and today). 15-16 August - Western Europe. Both lows are still working hard to try and stay in place but are struggling to do so with Southerly winds aloft dragging a lot of moisture north over Scandinavia. Big line of storms from northern Italy to Austria.
Day 3 (lastnight and today). 15-16 August - Western Sahara.

I'll keep updating this so long as the rain lasts. Europe is still very much in drought.
Here are the latest 3,5,10 and 16 day forecasts for accumulated rainfall. It looks as if Germany still has at least five days to wait but that after that it will get a fair few decent showers.
/ENDS

Doh! 5.30 Ethiopia time. I’ve been away too long. Sitting down here to listen to this properly. @BilleneSeyoum has a real presence at the podium. I wish we could hear from her weekly. Image
Very adroit and respectful answers from Billene and as usual lots of material.

It was a bit of a shame that the same question was asked so often. It is the most important question, but the answer was clear after the first question and answer - which was comprehensive.
Very helpful to have an explanation regarding the Amhara travel restrictions. They are about protecting addis from terrorist infiltration due to the widespread theft of official seals/stamps for official documentation.

Numbers below trom the @UN latest @UNOCHA report of July 22 >> reliefweb.int/report/ethiopi…. See also... reports.unocha.org/en/country/eth…

Since 1 April
- 4308 Trucks
- 580 Tonnes (MT) of Health Supplies
- 163,134 MT of Food
- 2,699 Tonnes of nutrition
.... and much more. A month ago. Image
@UN @UNOCHA .@DrTedros's description of the humanitarian situation is simply false. This latest abuse of his @WHO platform is particularly egregious as it appears he has coordinated this with the Mekele TPLF's rebel group's efforts to create a pretext to abandon peace talks.
Whilst it is true that services have not been restored. This is because contractors who were previously sent to Tigray to work on electricity and communications services were killed. The Govt. of Ethiopia yesterday asked for a ceasefire undertaking.

Two big wet tropical astmospheric rivers are about to collide over Denmark.
Just as happened back in July. @MeteoalarmEu has not forecast these storms. And has not issued alerts. And once again it is in the middle of the night.

There are warnings - but not in the right place. i.e. Germany & Denmark has heat warnings not thunderstorm warnings. Image

Given that apparently fighting has broken out in Wolkait, probably due to TPLF provocations in an effort to blow up the peace talks which are supposed to be about to start - it is unsurprising but remarkable that @DrTedros chose today to do this in his WHO press briefing. Image
@DrTedros This is not the first time he has used his WHO media briefing to assist his comrades in the TPLF, in which he was formerly the No. 3 leader. Many people believe he still is a member of the TPLF's executive committee which makes decisions about things like war - and peace talks.
@DrTedros But it is the first time for several months, and it is also the first time for sometime that he has also used the @WHO Twitter Platform itself - with nearly 12 million followers - to assist the TPLF.

Ok so helpful retweet from @martinplaut identifying where this flare up on the Tigray border is. "around Dedebit" which is shown on these three maps.

On the last map I have identified the approximate location of Waldeba monestary in relation to Dedebit. ImageImageImageImage
Sorry,I got the position of the Waldeba Monastery wrong here is where it actually is.

Google Map Link >> goo.gl/maps/Fx2TUUJKX…

The Sugar Factory is part of a large industrial project which was started by Meles Zenawi and his wife - which includes a irrigation canal & dam. ImageImage
I have two interviews with monks from Waldeba which I should release.

One about the experience of the monks being invaded & the second the story of the sugar plantation, factory and associated dam which the monks vigorously and successfully opposed. ImageImageImageImage

Rashid Abdi of Nairobi’s SAHAN Intel, which is possibly a CIA cut-out is going all in on war in the Horn of Africa, alongside his friend @reda_getachew. Both seem to be angry about the latest announcement from the Peace Committee.

Thread… Image
Not sure why he’s angry with the Peace Cmtte. But the TPLF ever actually agreeing to talks without being forced to by their US/UN/EU enablers always seemed unlikely.

Abdi is clearly also over excited about @WilliamsRuto President Elect of Kenya. Image
On the issue of breaches of the ceasefire. If you read the Peace Cmtte. Report it’s clear that the Govt of Ethiopia doesn’t believe it has any confirmation that the TPLF has ever agreed to it. When it was announced their response was far from clear.

And they didn’t observe it. Image
