A short explainer to the "scandal" of Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin partying, for those who don't read Finnish.
1. Someone had leaked a video of Marin dancing with her friends.
2. A known neo-nazi and the Finnish equivalent of 4chan anonymous message board began to speculate that the participants in the video were on drugs. Their evidence: they thought someone on the video talked about "flour gang", which these trolls interpreted to mean drugs.
3. It is worth noting that police officers, crime reporters with 20+ years of experience, and researchers who have actually studied Finnish drug culture all say that the word for "flour" (jauho) isn't used to refer to drugs. Also, the audio quality is very poor.
4. The trolls from the anonymous message board - a hotbed of misogynism and far right trolling - began to drum up the "controversy." A known pro-Putin conspiracy theorist picked up the neo-nazi tweets and amplified them.
5. Large segments of Finnish media jumped on the bandwagon. So far, their key pieces of evidence are
a) a journalist insinuating that lack of bottles in the short video means that the participants must be on drugs
b) an anonymous "acoustics expert"
6. Note that this conveniently anonymous expert says that someone in the audio is talking about "flour", which the police, crime journalists and actual researchers say isn't used to refer to drugs in Finnish drug culture.
7. Extra irony points accrue from the fact that many people who now criticize Marin steadfastly defended a conservative member of parliament who just some weeks ago was accused by nine separate individuals to have been grooming underage girls and plying them with alcohol.
8. In short, this is probably the dumbest scandal I've seen, and I've seen some pretty fucking dumb ones.
(Correction: the very same ones who call for Marin's resignation are even now sending messages of support to aforementioned member of parliament)

Stumbled into a video where a U.S. Marine comments on the Finnish Defence Forces recruiting video (AFAIK) shown during call-up events. It gives a pretty good overview of how a citizen soldier military trains its troops. Some notes follow:
1. Note that the purpose of military service in Finland is to train capable units. The military has spent a lot of time over the years shaving off as much extraneous B.S. as possible: the goal is that as many minutes as possible contribute to building skills.
2. The training period (5.5 to 11.5 months depending on specialty) is just that: training.
Reservists are the real combat power.
Military units are considered combat-ready only after training is finished and (preferably) they have concluded at least one refresher exercise.
Aloitetaan toteamalla triviaalisti todeksi, että ceteris paribus l. kaiken muun pysyessä vakiona, ympäristöongelmat olisivat pienempiä jos ihmisiä olisi vähemmän.
Monen ajattelu loppuukin tähän. Pitäisi kuitenkin kysyä: miten paljon vähemmän, ja pysyisikö kaikki muu vakiona? 2/
On nimittäin yhtä triviaalisti totta, että jos kulutuksen määrä per ihminen jatkaa kasvuaan, ennen pitkää yksikin ihminen olisi liikaa.
Esim. jos kulutuksen vahingot kasvavat 2 prosenttia vuodessa, kauanko aikaa saataisiin puolittamalla kulutus, keinolla tai toisella? 3/
* pitkän matkan it-ohjusten tutka toimi, mutta ei jostain syystä kyennyt lukittumaan kohteisiin
* viestijärjestelmän käyttäminen kaatoi tutkan
* neljästä pääkoneesta 2 oli 20-25 000 käyttötuntia yli sallitun käyttöiän
* näitä sai käyttää vain laivaston komentajan luvalla
2/
* kaksi muuta konetta oli "vain" tuhansia tunteja yli sallitun käyttöiän
* jotkut aluksen generaattoreista toimivat, osan ajasta
* peräisinlaitteisto oli viallinen
* kaiken kaikkiaan alus sai arvosanan "tyydyttävä"

One of the concerns I have with #longtermism as it is currently practiced is that it tends to devalue non-human life. It does not seem plausible that the life of fish, for example, is so terrible that extinction would be good for them.
I think we need to learn how to share this world equitably with non-human life, if for no other reason than because our life support systems depend on them, and this means that more humans or AGIs aren't automatically a Good Thing. (Neither are fewer humans, though.)
In general, I find the goals of #longtermism commendable, but the blind spots are annoying.
For example, calling people to give what they can - why not just campaign for more equitable taxation?
