It is time for serious scrutiny of the @WHO Director-General @drtedros's role in the war in #Ethiopia.
During the past year, he has increasingly distorted the realities of the conflict to suit his personal interests.
Read on for our fact-checking record 👇
Content posted to @DrTedros's social media channels and @WHO social media channels suggest political intent.
We have correlated the promotion of #Tigray vs #Afar & #Amhara content on these channels below:
An analysis of Dr Tedros's public comments since Nov 2020 shows he has not once referenced suffering in #Afar & #Amhara.
This is at a time when @UNHumanRights describes the Afar situation as “dire with alarming levels of food insecurity and malnutrition.”
His comments on humanitarian aid also contradict the language being used by other @UN agencies, which have said the aid program is meeting its targets. Adrian van der Knaap, WFP's Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, went as far as saying famine had been averted in #Tigray.
It is important to note that as a staff member of @WHO, @DrTedros is beholden to the same obligations as all UN staff.
Namely, as can be seen in the code of ethics below, he is required to observe neutrality in political situations 👇
Raising the alarm for people in #Tigray is important, the region will need significant support to rebuild over the coming years, but that is not what @DrTedros is doing.
The trend of his public comments is consistent with the language used by the TPLF leadership & is political.
We call on the @WHO & @UN to uphold the obligations & standards they require of all their staff, & sanction those who breach them, even the #WHO Director-General.
Not doing so will damage the rep of such an important org. on the world stage & undermine vital health work.
"#Ethiopia is a developing country making significant democratic & economic reforms, an African nation taking an international lead on the climate emergency, the biggest global challenge of our age." 1/4
"Is condemnation, are sanctions, are visa restrictions, the right course of action by leaders in Brussels and Washington, actions that destabilize and negatively impact the most vulnerable in society? I don’t think so." 2/4
"It’s vital the conflict in #Tigray is brought to an end. The current declaration of a unilateral ceasefire by the Ethiopian Government is welcome and will hopefully be heeded by the other parties to avert further humanitarian disaster." 3/4
