I am fortunate to have an #NIH #K25 award.

In this 🧵, I will share advice about K25 awards. These opinions are my own, based on my experience, and do not represent the NIH.

Hope this helps anyone preparing a K25!

Who should apply for a K25 award?

K25s are for quantitative experts seeking training in a new clinical area. These are perfect for (bio)statisticians starting in a faculty role pivoting to a new area that aligns with their institution.

K25s cover 75% FTE for up to 5 years. 2/
⭐️Most important advice in this thread⭐️

Include a figure connecting your career goals, proposed training, mentor expertise, and research aims.

The next career step should be submitting an R01 and becoming an independent scientist in the new clinical field. 3/
Candidate background/career development

Tell your story. What research have you done and why are you interested in pivoting?

You need to establish that your quantitative strengths are an asset in the new clinical area and that you are dedicated to the area long-term. 4/
Candidate background/biosketch

You must demonstrate quantitative expertise (pubs/grants), and evidence of beginning to work in the new clinical field (pubs/pilot grant/conference presentations).

Go for a K if you NEED to be training to be successful, otherwise go for an R. 5/
Research strategy

You should write research aims for multiple levels:
➡️people who are smart but know nothing about your quantitative field (aka the new clinical area expert reviewers)
➡️quantitative experts in your field

This is a hard balancing act. 6/
Mentors

Choose people in the new clinical area you are training in. It helps if at least one mentor has a long track record of funding/pubs/mentoring.

Work with your mentors on a few papers/presentations before submitting to show you have a successful working relationship. 7/
Scoring

The research aims aren’t as important as the investment in you and your potential.

People will always criticize the research, so I focused on trying to score well on investigator (me!), environment, mentors (their expertise and dedication to you), and training plan. 8/
Take advantage of resources for preparing K awards

NIA webinar (), ACTS meeting mock study section, writing workshops, etc.

Ask people with a K to share their grant with you (and share your grant after you’re funded!). 9/

Best of luck to you in your K25 application! I’m happy to answer any questions!
