This is an interesting map from @aei, of all places, showing homes within a 10-min walk of at least 6 different amenities (e.g. restaurants, stores, etc).
Some really interesting things pop out. A quick 🧵
The oldest neighborhoods do really well, even if they have a lot of SFH, i.e, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, Ballard.
But West Seattle and North Seattle, oof.
Montlake is really hurting. It should have much better walkability given it’s location, but it’s commercial core is too constrained and can’t actually hold enough services. It really needs a zoning overhaul and not an even bigger freeway tearing it apart even more.
The whole corridor along Lake Washington has terrible walkability. A lot of that is geography—it’s really steep!
Since the walkability is low, the upzoning there needs to be really high so that there’s enough people in the small walksheds that businesses there would have.
