After Ukraine has bombed Crimea & Belgorod, panic spreads among ordinary Russians. It must be felt in the Kremlin as well. Therefore, Putin is now softening & seems to prepare negotiations. The question to Ukrainians now is now what they should demand.
1. As President @ZelenskyyUa rightly has insisted, Ukraine must recover all its territories, Crimea & the whole of Donbas.
2. Ukraine needs credible security guarantees. As Putin's disregard of all international agreements show, the only credible security guarantee is NATO membership plus a strong national defense.
3. Russia must pay war reparations for the probably $300 billion of damages it has caused Ukraine (direct damages $110bn, $70bn less GDP in 2022 & probably 50,000 Ukrainians killed). The West should facilitate this by confiscating the Russian Central Bank's $316 bn in the West.
4. Since the 2014 war started from Russia's naval base in Sevastopol, Russia needs to evacuate the base forever.
5. Probably 2 million Ukrainians have left for or been evacuated or imprisoned in Russia. All Ukrainians who so desire and all the children should be returned to Ukraine and get rid of enforced Russian citizenships.
6. The thousands of Russian soldiers and officials who have committed serious war crimes should be prosecuted in the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which can finally fully serve its purpose.
7. All Western sanctions on Russia must be maintained until Russia has fulfilled all these and other reasonable conditions. No easing of sanctions until Russia has fully conceded.
8. To facilitate an early and beneficial peace, it is vital that the US and Europe deliver all the arms they can to Ukraines so that it can end the war. This war can only end with Ukrainian victory. Russian victory would mean a future war on the West.

Let us sort out the most obvious points half a year after Russia attacked Ukraine:
1. Russia has lost this war.
2. Putin has not figured out as yet how he is to explain his embarrassment. Is it possible? I doubt it.
3. Ukraine has not recovered the 20% of its land that Russia seized. As @MaxBoot suggests, it might benefit from just wearing the Russians out and persuade them to go home.
4. To me, the Russian version of 1917 appears more likely: The Russian soldiers shoot their cruel officers.
5. Putin has all reasons to offer concessions and the West MUST not give in. The West should just tell the Russians to go home from the whole of Ukraine.
6. The US must give Ukraine all the arms it needs to defeat Russia: Long-distance missiles & airplanes.

While I am generally highly supportive of the Biden policy in support of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, I have a few objections:
1. There is no reason to be afraid of provoking Putin. He will respect you if you stand up to him, as the US has done.
2. Stop worrying about nuclear war! Putin, with five known superyachts, will not survive a nuclear war. Hitler had plenty of chemical arms but he committed suicide instead of using them on the battlefield, because they could not help him to win. Nukes are obsolete.
3. Also stop worrying about any third World War! Since Russia cannot defeat Ukraine, it would be absurd even by Putin standards to try to expand the war, & it would lead to his faster defeat. The West must relearn to trust its strength.

My good friend @McFaul has written an excellent article about the war in Ukraine. Let me emphasize some of his main points:
1. "Putin, not Zelensky, is the key decision-maker for ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine."
washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/…
2. "Strangely, few in this army of advisers direct their wisdom toward Moscow. Why does no one offer Putin advice for how to end his invasion?"
3. "To those claiming to make the “case for diplomacy,” in alleged opposition to the “case for war,” please detail how you would persuade or compel Putin to stop the conflict. Real diplomacy takes two to tango."

The US is in a sad constitutional state with an undemocratic, legislating SCOTUS out of control that has in one week.
1. Promoted guns to raise murder rates.
2. Prohibited abortion.
3. Promoted pollution.
Abolish this harmful body!
Establish a real legal court instead!
The 1st condition for a supreme court is professionalism, which SCOTUS possibly fulfills.
The 2nd condition is nonpolitical, while SCOTUS is completely political.
The 3rd condition is loyal to the law, while SCOTUS legislates.
4th: independence, while SCOTUS looks bought.
What needs to be done:
Establish an independent judicial council that nominates & appoints top judges.
Demand full transparency of of justices' finances.
Impose term limits & retirement age.
Raise the justices' salaries to be competitive.

A few thoughts about Russia's war on Ukraine:
1. The Russians have spent a lot of resources to seize Severodonetsk to little military benefit. The much higher located Lysychansk is far more important & better fortified. Ukraine is not likely to give it up or lose much there.
2. Both sides are very quiet about what happens around Kherson. Is an effective Ukrainian counteroffensive taking place? That remains to be seen.
3. The stronger Western artillery is gradually arriving & reinforcing the Ukrainian forces substantially.
4. Rumors claim that Putin is intent on false flag actions in Belarus to prompt Lukashenka to attack Lithuania. I don't think anybody is that dumb. Nobody would believe Lithuania attacked Belarus. Lukashenka would not attack Lithuania, but NATO would respond with full force.

The Western restraint in its defense of Ukraine, which is really a defense of the West itself, is difficult to comprehend.
1. Russia bombs the whole of Ukraine time and again: The united West says no to the establishment of a no-fly zone because it could be provocative to Russia & lead to encounters between Russian & NATO airplanes.
2. Russia bombs Ukraine from bases in Russia, Crimea, the Black Sea & the Caspian Sea: The West insists that Ukraine must not attack any Russian territory with Western arms.
