Hey @Folklorama, how do you feel by banning the words “war” and “Heroyam Slava / Glory to Heroes” in your festival this year? Especially in Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion?
Every year thousands of Ukrainians perform, sponsor, volunteer and build the audience for Ukrainian Pavilions as well as other pavilions. Millions of Ukrainians flee the war, and more than 35k landed in Canada. Is this the treatment and support we deserve?! @Folklorama
We were shocked to see the pictures of unruined Mariupol, Luhansk, Donetsk and Chernihiv as the visit card of Ukraine in the Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion exhibition and to read the presentation of theatres and factories that do not exist anymore. @Folklorama @mmmaiello @Deborah_Bowers
These places turned to be mass graves to thousands of Ukrainian women, men and children. No word was written or pronounced there to the guests about the real situation. Almost no one, except us newcomers, was aware that the exhibited heritage is already lost. @Folklorama
Our friends and relatives who were volunteering day to day for the pavilion were humiliated and rudely interrupted when they pronounced those forbidden words or tried to tell the truth. @Folklorama@mmmaiello@Deborah_Bowers
A lot of the volunteers have family members and friends who are fighting for Ukraine back home and for peace all over the world. It was painful to realize that here, in a democratic Canada, that stands for truth and democracy, it is forbidden to say “Glory to Heroes!” @Folklorama
Ukrainian culture is vibrant, it’s being created right now, and we are in charge of its future. The war and truth about this war is part of Ukrainian culture. Those who suppress the truth and do not let Ukrainians honor their heroes contribute to killing their culture @Folklorama
