Billie Nyx: This is my first time attending Netroots Nation; it's really cool being here with like-minded people tuned into the same issues. It's nice to have fresh perspectives. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Billie Nyx: I didn't know anything abt union organizing till I got started. I learned from other union leaders in New Orleans & from Starbucks Workers United. Anyone can get interested in organizing; you just have to have these conversations with your coworkers. @VentiSolidarity
Billie Nyx: Even without a union, you have certain rights like strikes & bringing issues to management. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Billie Nyx: The Starbucks manager was not kidnapped; the workers didn't even try to keep her from leaving. Starbucks is going off the rails with their union-busting tactics. Every day it gets worse. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Billie Nyx: I didn't know until a few weeks ago that there was a campaign for Starbucks workers to organize back in the 70's & Howard Schultz shut it down. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Billie Nyx: We're up to 220 union wins at Starbucks. Starbucks says the NLRB is rigging the elections.
Rick: How?
Billie: I don't know! If anyone, Starbucks is messing w/ the elections by hiring anti-union people to put on the ballots. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Billie Nyx: Chipotle & Trader Joe's are unionizing, I think b/c of Starbucks & Amazon workers taking on these big organizations. It's giving other people the incentive to organize. @VentiSolidarity#StarbucksUnited
Andrew Warren: I don't think my suspension had anything to do with what I said or did; it's part of Ron DeSantis' bid for president. He wants to show how tough he is for suspending me as a prosecutor. @AndrewWarrenFL
Andrew Warren: The FL constitution grants very limited power for the governor to replace an elected official, but that's generally restricted to when a crime was committed or when the person suffered a stroke & was unable to serve. @AndrewWarrenFL
Andrew Warren: I spoke out against DeSantis' pet issues: abortion bans & transgender issues/gender-affirming healthcare. I can't be expected to enforce a law that doesn't exist & a law that's unconstitutional. @AndrewWarrenFL
Sari Beth Rosenberg: I had not heard of George Dawson. I'm excited to learn about him but I'm not happy about WHY I'm hearing about him. Now I want to read his book & I'm sure all the kids at his school want to read it now, too. @saribethrose@VotersTomorrow@TeachersUnify
Sari Beth Rosenberg: I would love to know which part of George Dawson's book were objectionable. When I first saw this story today, I thought someone was punking me. I bet his book is already sold out on Amazon. @saribethrose@VotersTomorrow@TeachersUnify
Rick: There were a bunch of books I had to read in school that are now being banned. Basically my education is being banned. #RickShow
Santiago Mayer: We've seen the far right pick a fight against Gen Z, & we need to show them they've chosen the wrong generation to pick on. Climate change, gun rights, protecting abortion rights are things young people care about. @santiagomayer_@VotersTomorrow
Santiago: Every generation goes through crises but they generally have a come-together moment. Gen Z hasn't had that. We were born during 9/11. We had the 2008 collapse. The pandemic. We've seen the worst of the world but we've never seen the best of it. @santiagomayer_
Rick: When I was a kid, we had drills, going under our desks in case of nuclear war.
Santiago Mayer: Absolutely. Your desk would protect you from nuclear fallout.
Rick: Now we have active shooter drills. @santiagomayer_@VotersTomorrow
Adam Green: Netroots Nation has been a family reunion of sorts; people who collaborate together are seeing each other in person again. @BoldProgressive
Adam Green: I was reminding someone to vote, & they said, "Yeah, 2024."
Rick: No, there's an election this year, too. The local elections are more important than presidential elections. @BoldProgressive
Adam Green: The Independent State Legislature Doctrine says not even state courts have oversight power over election policy set by state legislatures. That's why it's so important to keep an eye on state legislatures. @BoldProgressive
Hamilton Nolan: I'm here courtesy of The News Guild; I'll be moderating a panel here at Netroots Nation. @hamiltonnolan@inthesetimesmag
Hamilton Nolan: Labor is very hot at the grassroots level right now. ALU is such a great example of what's happening right now. They have all this incoming interest from Amazon warehouses all over the country, but they don't have the resources to help all of them. @hamiltonnolan
Hamilton: I'm an optimist for Labor movement. If ppl understand what unions are about & what they do, they'll be in favor of unions. The positive feeling of regular people towards unions is in the air right now & we need to take advantage of that. @hamiltonnolan@inthesetimesmag
Rick: Everyone I'm talking to here [Netroots Nation] is looking to you as the example for union organizing.
Christian Smalls: I have a strong team & we're inspiring so many people. @Shut_downAmazon@amazonlabor
Rick: Do you think you can replicate in Albany what you did in Staten Island?
Christian Smalls: Albany workers are ready to go; when the workers say they're ready to file a petition, we'll file. We're happy they're ready to go & we'll be behind them. @Shut_downAmazon@amazonlabor
Rick: I tell people to look to you as an example of ground-up grassroots organizing.
Christian Smalls: We have to build off workplace commonalities, especially b/c we know our workers have different political views, incl Trump supporters. @Shut_downAmazon@amazonlabor
