1/n Have you wondered why folks you previously thought of as Left of Center, are appearing on @TuckerCarlson, @EpochTimes, @theblaze, etc.?

It’s effectively the story behind this tweet. Before 2011, outfits like @npr were left leaning news services. About 10yrs ago that changed.
I used to talk to folks at @cnn, @npr, @washingtonpost etc all the time on inflation, physics, immigration, science policy, etc. Then, mysteriously reporters slowly started complaining about the situation at work much more. It seemed like we went from news with spin to narrative.
Narrative driven news was the @nytimes special brand. On the one hand it *was* written with lively prose. On the other hand, I hated the idea that the narrative arc was constructed to fit facts that sometimes hadn’t even happened yet.

This idea of narrative beyond spin took off.
Reporters started warning me:

“We’re hiring kids who don’t believe in objective factual reporting.”

“We’re being pushed to be on Twitter.”

“Editors aren’t letting our best stories through as much.”

“I can’t use you any more if you aren’t going to play ball. It sucks. Sorry.”
I can probably figure out the last time a reporter called me up trying to understand a story as opposed to trying to get grist for a gotcha piece. But it seems like years ago.

So what happened? Many democrats tried to go back to @NPR etc., but found a door slammed in their face.
Eventually we took the hint. Journalism at prestige legacy media properties was changing. News desks were dropping stories entirely that didn’t fit house narratives. They weren’t forced to report them and spin them. They would just spike a story that previously would be a scoop.
And this lead to a question: “If @FoxNews is willing to run and spin a story that @nytimes or @cnn is pretending doesn’t exist, do I go on that channel?”

Now at first you think “Why would left leaning media push smart left leaning academicians to the Right?” But then you get it.
The answer is that if you’re a Democrat in the US who doesn’t agree with the new crazy direction of the party and its media, then in the new world you need to become one of two things:

A) Silent
B) identified with the discredited far loony tunes Right.

Hence: “You went on Fox!”
So you’ll see the following tweet: “If you want to know who Prof. ABC **really** is, look at where she chooses to appear!”

But the good doctor ABC isn’t making this choice. She is choosing not to be silenced by media that stopped reporting and started defending news narratives.
So expect more & more ordinary dissenting Professors, Physicians, Economists, Technologists to show up on Right of center platforms.

They aren’t making the choice you are being led to believe they are. Ask instead “Why did you CHOOSE @Fox over @NPR?”

And then you’ll learn why.
The last piece of diabolical BS is you will hear this “Boo hoo. People with enormous platforms whine about being cancelled or silenced. Go cry to your millions of listeners.”

Not the point. Institutions can ignore almost any individuals with large followings, but not big media.
The point of cancellation is making sure that you have to go on @joerogan to spread reasoned dissent. If you could really do it through legacy media it would FORCE hearings. It would force disclosures. It would force resignations. But experts can’t get the needed access anymore.
MORAL: When you want to know why dissenting democrats are all over Right wing media, it is largely about blackballing all those who would disassemble the house narrative and strategies of the institutions. Legacy media is by and *for* institutions now. That’s why it seems insane.
Don’t fall for the “Dr. XYZ went on the EPOCH TIMES!!” It’s a trick. Learn it.

Instead ask: “Why didn’t you go on @MSNBC, @npr, @nytimes, @cnn instead.

And brace yourself for the answer.

Thanks!

End

🙏

As many inferred, I wasn’t happy about “Dark Horse” making dismissive internet-level commentary about “Making Sense” having “TDS”. I was further unhappy about the response of “Making Sense” podcast casting aspersions in return.

But I don’t owe the internet what’s privately said.
As for “family first”, that’s my general rule. I’m backward like that. Throw me in “progressive jail” for having a hierarchy of loyalty.

But whether family or close friends, I expect the same loyalty & civility in return. I mostly live off line and advise others to do likewise.
Interpersonal drama is destroying our world because it turns all conversation into an internet version of Reality TV, but with real people. And I wish folks would stop building audience around interpersonal drama between folks.

It’s so destructive compared to ideas or real work.

It really depends. Being totally honest:

“String Theory” has done a *tremendous* amount of good while “String Maximalism” has done even more harm.

If the String Theorists who led the movement were to undo some of the damage by admitting what happened, it’d be a major positive.
Here is where I respectfully disagree with my colleague @skdh. You can’t ‘get rid of string theory’. String-like objects are natural and have an unbelievably rich and beautiful interlocking mathematics. The beguiling beauty isn’t the problem in my opinion. Beauty is the excuse.
The problem is that string theory on its own has taken the last 40years to PROVE it doesn’t work as a stand alone path by gobbling up mind share, students, resources and (to be fair) most of the most brilliant brains. So much that no one dares say the full extent of the disaster.

Think of the current group of Septuagenarians/Octogenarians running the US as a self-reinforcing clique who shore each other up. Soon, those who die or quit will cause the rest of them to be unable to protect themselves from the questions we have long been prevented from asking.
I predict that at that point there will be an accelerated exit of folks who may have wanted to retire for a long time but who have actually stayed because it’s safer to remain in control of a stage managed system that refuses to call for hearings, discovery, disclosure & justice.
Lastly, I predict the accelerated exit won’t be partisan because the extraction in which they shared wasn’t partisan. I actually think many of these people have reasoned that they can’t retire until they are too old to worry about. Maybe mid to late 80s.

Let’s see what happens.

I feel gaslit when grown-ups talk about labor shortages in market economies w wage mechanisms.

It’s basically an admission that capitalism is meant as a TRICK where workers can’t benefit from markets.

Let’s talk about the ongoing equities shortage & printing shares for workers.
You see, longterm labor shortages don’t exist in large market economies.

But the news media counts on workers being too dumb to understand the wage mechanism. So everyone in media pretends to believe in labor shortages. Like they were jackalopes.

Let’s print shares & not visas.
Let’s talk about “equities shortages” which are no more real than “labor shortages”. That way every S.O.B. who whines about a labor shortage will hear: “Oh. It’s because of the Stock Share Shortage. You just have to print new shares of your company to get your workers energized.”

People are asking what I think of @SamHarrisOrg’s recent stated positions surrounding Trump related issues.

That they’re wrong? At least that’s my opinion. This is not a secret. I have been warning Sam openly about the danger of his theory of Trump since dinner on Jan 3, 2017.
That’s not a dunk. It’s not dragging. He’s been great on all sorts of stuff. But Free Will, Trump, & the scalability of virtuous Atheism have been 3 areas of persistent disagreement.

And I’ll continue to disagree w/ my friend. I’d be happy to discuss, steel-man or debate too.
But if I were to be egoic about this I would say that what Sam needs most is to have his underlying position steel-manned first by someone ELSE. What got said on that interview *was* troubling in substance. But the bit about corpses of children, etc. is just such a total misfire.

I am increasingly seeing @twitter in a different light: as a company that is willfully physically endangering those that do not share the Revolutionary politics of its staff and management.

What if selective application of its capricious terms of service is precursor to murder?
Why is open glorification of attempted murder & mayhem against an author by those mocking “freedom of expression” all over Twitter…just so long as it is not written in English and barely concealed with a Google Translate button? Am I wrong about this? It seems to be everywhere:
Keep in mind that while this kind of posting is flowing everywhere around you on Twitter, the account you are reading now is heavily throttled.

Bottom Line: This isn’t up to @twitter as “a private company that can do whatever it wants”. This is *facilitating* violence to come.
