Can eating plants harm you? Here's what I've learned and some of the scientists I've learned it from /thread
All plants have chemical defences to deter their predators, some deadly (eg ricin) some not so much. If the plant wants you to eat a bit (fruit) and spread its seeds around via your poop that bit will be less defended (Dr Anthony Chaffee)
The plants' babies (seeds) are most highly defended either by hard/poisonous shell (eg peach stone) or by toxins (eg. Grains), because it doesn't want them chewed and destroyed, it wants them dispersed by wind or other means to make a new plant.
All humans are affected by gluten (which is a lectin) and the archaeological record shows a decline in the robustness of human specimens and new diseases since the time we began cultivating grains around 8-10,000 years ago.
Gluten can destroy the integrity of the gut lining and lead to 'leaky gut' where toxins, bacteria and viruses can now get into the body. Through cellular mimicry they can prompt a devastating auto-immune response, like rheumatoid arthritis.
Some plants are well known for their medicinal powers, eg. Witch Hazel, or Comfrey (which used to be known as Knit-Bone) and this wisdom was passed down thru generations, until big pharma arrived (my Mum)
Other plants were used to supplement the diet when hunting was poor, and later to demonstrate wealth and importance, or for interest and variety. Nitrogen testing of ancient bones show that early humans ate mostly meat and fat (Prof Bart Kay) and our digestive system shows this.
Animals like cows and sheep are plant-processing factories who turn all the plant nutrients into animal flesh on their bodies and importantly de-toxify it at the same time. We evolved to consume the animals who've done the job for us. (Professor Natasha Campbell-McBride)
