Finally the much talked about "Southern Arc" paper of LAZARIDIS etal has been published. Below are just some preliminary comments based on the authors' statements & results in the main text (nothing deep). 1st some background: 1. We have good evidence that the likely phylogenetic
model for the languages including Indo-European & Anatolian is Indo-Hittite (Indo-Anatolian), i.e., Anatolian branched first, then the rest of IE split up from PIE. 2. Balto-Slavic was a likely sister group of I-Ir in a ``satem'' clade lodged deep in IE. 3. Greco-Armenian &
Italo-Celtic were likely solid clades as well. 4. All these non-Anatolian branches can be clearly traced to the steppe on philological/archaeogenetic grounds. 5. So far the Anatolia archaeogenetics has not revealed a strong steppe signal. 6. The authors have assembled hundreds of
genomes from west Asia, including Anatolia & covering the period when Anatolian languages were spoken. Despite this expanded dataset, they found no clear evidence for steppe presence in the period when Anatolian languages were dominant. 7. Hence, they posit a variant of the
Caucasian Hunter Gatherer hypothesis that had made its rounds in the early days of the archaeogenetic foray into IE origins. 8. As per their current version, there were two pulses of CHG ancestry into the steppe. An old one which was pretty deep in time & a more recent one which
they believe also took some Anatolian Farmer/Levantine ancestry along with it into the steppe. This second pulse is postulated as pre-Yamnaya and critical for its founding. 9. They also see a rise in CHG ancestry starting from an Eastern Anatolian locus & moving west. 10. They
take this movement of CHG into Anatolia & the second pulse into the steppe as the signal of original Indo-Anatolian spread -- Anatolian obviously the movement into Anatolia & the movement into the steppe as PIE. They present this as the below map -- something that brings memories
of the Soviet workers, Gamkrelidze and Ivanov. 11. However, in the text, the authors are more circumspect & mention that it could Maykop, Eastern Anatolia in addition to Armenia as possible sources from which this CHG pulse that founded PIE might have originated. 12. They also
admit that a much wider sampling in Iran, North Mesopotamia, and Azerbaijan would be needed for more precise mapping. note that the Mesolithic individual from Hotu Cave from Iran is a classic CHG.
To be continued later...
13. To summarize the Indo-Anatolian cladogenesis as per the authors' conception: A CHG population prior to the invention of the wheel (as the word for wheel is unattested in the reconstructed Anatolian cognates with IE) expanded into Anatolia ~6000 YBP. They spoke the ancestor of
the Anatolian languages. In Anatolia they encountered at least two other major ancestries termed Levant pre-pottery neolithic & a Northwest Anatolian ancestry. The authors suspect these might be associated with the local languages like Hurrian &Hattic. Another branch of the CHG
population moved north into the steppe and merged with a HG-eneolithic population which was a mixture Eastern HG & CHG. They took the precursor of the PIE language to the steppe. By the time of PIE on the steppe (earliest Yamnaya) these people had the wheel & the horse. The
Yamnaya then expanded east (Afanasievo=Proto-Tocharian?); into the Balkans, back to Armenia & Greece->Greco-Armenian &Balkan tongues like Thracian etc (Albanian might be only survivor). Another wave into Europe after absorbing some Globular Amphora farmer ancestry-> Italo-Celtic
satem was another branch of the group that interacted with Globular Amphora. A branch of that expanded east as the Indo-Iranians (Sintashta). They had a clear contact with the Uralics. While the authors state that: ". Contributions of Indo-European to Uralic languages (spoken in
the forest zone of Eastern Europe and Siberia) appear to have involved only Indo-Iranian speakers ~4200 years ago," we think the picture was more complex. There is a proto-Uralic component that seems to reflect earlier loans from a language close to PIE. This was later augmented
by 3x more loans from I-Ir & IA. This means that the Uralics& IE were close by in the Yamnaya period itself but the I-Ir& IA reentered their vicinity from the west, intensifying the contacts. A controversial aspect of the paper is the authors tentative suggestion that the R1b1a1
V1636 Y Haplogroup might reflect migration from the "Southern Arc"->steppe. However, they admit that old versions of this were found in the steppe & it could have come down from there. This would then bring to question their favored hypothesis & invert it to a total steppe origin
for Indo-Anatolian. However, if we assume they are right it brings back a question we have been asking for a while. Does it imply that the CHG group spread carried a broader range of "para-Indo-Anatolian" languages? For e.g., Greece had a CHG entry prior to the Greeks. What about
such an CHG population moving east to Iran& India (contributing to Harappan ancestry) did they bear para-Indo-Hittite languages. Of course "Southern Arc" hypothesis needs a much closer look before reaching anywhere close to an acceptance threshold.

Image of nIlalohita rudra holding the corpse of the buffalo-demon hAlAhala from ahichChatra. The kShetra of the rudra is however the holy kurukShetra. There are 3 buffalo demons in H tradition: 1. The oldest is mahiSha slain by skanda; 2. mahiSha slain by kumArI vindhyavAsinI
3. hAlAhala slain by nIlalohita rudra. The archaic skandapurANa provides that tale. Even as the 5th head of brahman uttered the incantation:
कापालिन् रुद्र बभ्रो .अथ भव कैरात सुव्रत |
पाहि विश्वं विशालाक्ष कुमार वरविक्रम ||
nIlalohita rudra desiring to furnish himself with a skull
He is said to have placed this skull at kurukShetra and his gaNa's raised a great uproar. The asura-s led by the buffalo demon hAlAhala then challenged them &were killed by the rudra's retinue. Then nIlalohita offered the flesh of the buffalo demon a feast for a bevy of ferocious
This is a stub for a future note on Iranic lunar deities. The marUnmatta al-shahrastAnI, an adherent of the founder of the Assassins, Hasan bin sabbAh ironically recorded a fragment of a lost Iranic puruSha-sUkta-like origin mythology, where ahura mazdhA speaks in 1st person
ahura mazdA: "I created the whole of this world from myself. I created the souls of the righteous from the hair of my head; the sky from my brain; nails and arms ...(?) from my forehead; the sun from my eye; the moon from my nose; the stars from my tongue; sraosha &the rest of
the yazata-s from my ear; the earth from the sinew of my foot." ~based on Shaked. The moon deity here is mAh which appears to be spelt as MAO in the kuShANa coin and is usually depicted with the moon, a club & a sword. There is another deity seen on kuShAna coins & rare Roman
I'm twting his with some reluctance not because I doubt any of the stuff uncovered here but because it engages in unnecessary vanity boosterism of certain individuals involved. It seems there is some money involved here & money to be made by some which has science.org/content/articl…
given it the high profile airing it is getting. The primary reason for twting this out is that biomedical research & more broadly branches of molecular biology/biochemistry allied with it are rife with such cases. Indeed there clear examples where the same tabloids like Science&
Nature & other sensationalist venues of the Cell family have done absolutely nothing to correct a lot of the fake science they have published. The impact of recent pandemic on biomedical research/production, the rise of ML-based methods & the money flowing into certain research
When ShiDga became mlechCharAT a band of ideologues penetrated the mlechCha deep state apparatus. They started off aligned with the gardabhins & were aligned with tech & deeply committed to projects related to the marusthala & destruction of the Rus. It seems they let ShiDga keep
keep busy with his maithuna even as they tested out their agenda in bhagadattapura, against the Serbs & with Yeltsin. We all know who was the man who put a stop to the last of these projects. Then after ShiDga went they set a system such that some of their kind could now work
with guchChaka with vakrAs as their frontend. In this round, they focused on their pet agenda in the kingdom centered on bhagadattapura. When ardhakR^iShNa ascended the throne they curbed his tendencies & brought him to ground while skewering al Qaddafy in the process. During
Between 1870-80 CE a V1 from the marahaTTa country named Mahadev Kunte was among the 1st group of Indians to appreciate the historical significance of the IE theory. From today's vantage a self-aware H (leaving aside the willful celebrators of counter-factual delusions) would
see him with v.mixed feelings. On 1 hand he had internalized the humiliating rout of the marahaTTa host in the 1st war of independence; thus, in some ways, like the va~NgIya Vankimchandra, he felt that the intercourse with the ascendant Occident will revive in India a glorious IE
civilization. He wrote this cringe-worthy eulogy to please his English overlords, particularly JB Peile whom he saw as a benevolent patron of the H. Hence, it would not be a great surprise if many of his coethnics, some of whose recent ancestors had perished in the attempt to
1 of the consequences of our closeness to the Rus in the days of my youth was that a good part of our education was from Rus works (translated to Eng). There we learnt of 1 of the greatest intellectuals the gigantic Lomonosov. He seems to be largely ignored in the occident& even
sometimes claimed to be a product of Rus boosterism. While I'm no scholar of the topic to formally rebut that claim but we find it shaky as we have his exchanges with Euler that are a clear testimony of his remarkable achievements. The Rus imported a lot of Germans & high IQ Jews
to build their intellectual tradition but Lomonosov was a local man of v.humble roots -- a literal matsyendra in their midst. In terms of his cerebral achievements in relatively short life of 53 years he would have matched the ideal expressed in our tradition of true vidvAn.
