(Thread) Picked up pieces from a long summer for the #Patriots offense. 1. Tackle is a concern. Both spots. Isaiah Wynn, who fits the new scheme better than anyone, can't stay on the field, has not been a happy camper & has had his name brought up by the Pats in trade talks.
2. I believe they would move him if any of the backup tackles - Herron, Cajuste - had elevated. Cajuste has had some moments but that's a risky roll of the dice.
3. Trent Brown was a beast in individual pass blocking drills but when the Pats gathered as a team, had issues protecting Mac's blindside and also being the road grader most fans remember from 2018 or even in fits and starts last year (Cleveland/at Buff). He's not getting LT $$$
4. Brown gets 6.5 million this yr, including just 1.5 in base salary. Would he have signed that knowing he was the LT? Brown told me it was never conveyed to him that he would be LT. More figure it out. He had a moment in the Carolina preseason week where he was sat down...
5. On the offense, the repeated talking pointl is to allow players to play faster. By and large, that hasn't happened yet. Talking to people in the building, it's more about what's happened up front that has made what's going on at the skill position look sluggish. But buy-in...
is still a concern. Players need to see it work to believe it will work. The frustration that I (and much of the beat) has illustrated here and elsewhere is real. It's also no surprise to those in the know that the old stuff has worked b/c the old stuff is what they believe works
6. That last point about the old stuff was front and center with the Pats in Vegas against Josh McDaniels. It reminded some key vets that Josh had a gift for putting the offense is position to succeed and also finding ways to get his playmakers the ball. Can new staff do that?
7. Flip side, the new offensive staff coaches hard but has not been as biting as McDaniels could be. We'll see how and if that continues to play once the regular season arrives.
8. The amount of weight that's been put on Mac's shoulders is - as one source told me - "considerable." This camp has been rocky but there is strong belief...
that the 2nd year QB turned a corner this week in Vegas. But as the same source noted, if they can't protect him (that remained an issue in joint practices with the Raiders) & can't find a consistent ground game (a recurring theme this summer), Mac's strengths will be muted.
