So I had this dream where the Lans are descended from the mysterious Lan An who is secretly a dragon and their forehead ribbons do more than just symbolize restraint.

It’s a dragon’s treasure with mysterious qualities, blessed by the gods themselves.

If a highly compatible (think: true mates) person touches a Lan’s forehead ribbon, the wearer will receive a blessing.

The blessing is a child.

Yes, said Lan gets pregnant and pops out a dragon egg. Such an incident is supposed to be a treasured and happy time because

it occurred very very rarely. Think once every century.
But this is the first time that such a blessing would be bestowed upon a Lan by ACCIDENT.

LWJ stares in disbelief at the apologetic look on the healer’s face. He had been feeling nauseous and tired since the archery

archery competition but he didn’t expect the reason to be because he was PREGNANT.

Beside him, LXC looks on in worry while LQR is purple in the face. He looks like he will either explode or faint.

“Tha-that-” LQR muffles angry words. He doesn’t know what to say.

His nephew is pregnant! Pregnant and unwed! And they can’t even tell the father of LWJ’s child because the Lans having dragon lineage is a big secret! Only people who have been approved through various trials and enter the main Lan Sect through marriage are allowed to know!

Everyone had seen WWX accidentally pull off LWJ’s ribbon. If it gets out that LWJ has been blessed by the gods, every Lan would know that the father is WWX.

LXC looks at his brother who is still frozen in shock. “We must send a letter of betrothal to YunmengJiang at once.”

"He hasn’t undergone the courting trials! Welcoming him into our family so swiftly will go against-”

“I believe young master Wei can be trusted.”

“Trusted! That boy is a menace!”

“Wei Ying is a good person,” LWJ suddenly speaks up, immediately catching everyone’s attention.

“But I will not marry him.” He gets up and leaves. His uncle and brother try to call after him.

“Wangji!”

LXC visits his brother in the evening. He gave him some time to get his feelings in order and when he visits, he sees that his brother seems steadier than earlier.

“Wangji,” Lan Xichen sits across the table. In front of his brother is a steaming dish of vegetable dumplings

drizzled with spicy sauce. His unexpected pregnancy has at least solve the question of his sudden cravings for spicy food. “I apologize for earlier but I thought you would have been happy to be wed to young master Wei.”

After the incident with his forehead ribbon, LWJ went into

seclusion for a week and when he came out he looked resigned. LXC saw his brother and he knew that the week in seclusion finally allowed him to acknowledge his feelings for WWX.

LXC had seen from the start how his brother felt the most when it came to WWX but he understood

he could not define LWJ’s feelings for him.

Hearing about the unexpected pregnancy, LXC was resolute to marry his brother to the one he loved. He thought LWJ would be happy, WWX was after all a good person.

“Brother,” LWJ says quietly. “WY is a free spirit.

I do not want to be his cage.”

‘Ah,’ LXC thinks. It has been a while since he thought about his parents’ circumstances. Their mother, who was lively and brilliant withered away in seclusion. Not even the thought of her children kept her alive longer.

LWJ speaks, “because of

our constitution and because I am your heir, I cannot marry out, so he would have to marry in. WWX will not thrive in CR.” LWJ says. “And I cannot force someone who does not love me to wed me.”

“You have not asked WWX how he feels about this.”

“And I will never ask him, he will never know.” LWJ says firmly. “I will raise this child on my own.”

“Wangji,” LXC sighs, “don’t you think he deserves to know about the child as well?”

LWJ is quiet for a moment which means he agrees but then he says, “I cannot tell him without exposing our secret.”

There is silence after that. For now, they are at an impasse.

It will be a six to seven months gestation month period and then the egg will be born and LWJ will have to seclude himself and the egg from the world for two months in his dragon form. Nest preparation is done a month before the egg is born.

A suitable cave in the Cloud Recesses

mountains should be found and the things gathered for nesting. Robes, pillows, blankets from his family- they all form a comfortable and large nest for him but-

LWJ places a hand on his pregnant belly, eyes burning with tears of frustration because of his mood swings. He feels tired, annoyed, and sad all at once.

It doesn’t smell quite right.

Halfway into the nest preparation, the Wens invade CR. LWJ is forbidden by his uncle and brother to fight. A handful of disciples guard him and hold him back as he tries to grab his sword.

“Young master, please,” one of the younger disciples looks at him pleadingly.

"Think of your child!”

The screaming and yelling outside makes Lan Wangji struggle harder and one healer apologizes as she temporarily paralyzes him.

“You have to take him away to somewhere safe,” the healer tells one disciple as she turns to the others. “The rest of you,

if you’re not willing to risk your life for our home then it’s best if you run away right now.”

LWJ’s eyes are open as he watches the Lan disciples join the battle. The disciple left behind carries him away and he sees the only home he has ever known, burn.

“I am so sorry, young master,” the young disciple, a few years younger than him is crying. They are second cousins and he was a teaching assistant to one of the older disciples.

They go through various shortcuts and the disciple apologizes every time a branch scratches

their robes and hands. The young disciple is crying so much when they finally exit the Lan barrier that he even trips but he makes sure to take the brunt of the fall and LWJ has never felt so helpless.

Two hours since their escape, they hear the sounds of pursuers.

“I thought

I saw someone in a white robe heading this way!” The shout seems to be miles away but it would only be a matter of minutes before they found them.

The disciple hurriedly looks around. He puts a hand on the ground and closes his eyes. He senses a grotto under a large oak tree,

covered in vines and foliage. He hurriedly goes that way and hides the pregnant LWJ, careful to cover him in his outer robe.

He takes out talismans for cover and anti-detection, placing it on the cave wall. He then takes out an antidote and carefully makes LWJ drink it.

“You will be able to move in an hour, young master. In the meantime, I will lead them faraway from here. Once you are able to move, please head to somewhere safe,” the Lan disciples gives him a low bow and LWJ stares at him, willing him with his eyes to stay.

The younger disciples sees something in his eyes and smiles sadly.

“Everything will be all right,” he says bravely. He stands tall and with one last bow to LWJ he goes directly towards direction of the Wens.

LWJ closes his eyes. The Lan dragons have superb hearing and he could

hear the sound of yells and clashing blades. The sky grows darker with each passing second.

Finally, there is a lone scream and heavy rain falls.

Whenever a dragon dies the heaven mourns.

LWJ moves as much as he can, turns his back on the rain and cries silently.

Two days of running through the forest and LWJ feels a piercing pain in his stomach. He falls against a rock and pants heavily.

It’s coming!

“No,” LWJ mumbles as he twitches in full-body pain. Isn’t it too soon? He still had a month or two to go! It’s too early!

The stress of the situation has made LWJ’s body determine it would be safer to give birth right now. He has no choice. He lays down his cousin’s outer robe behind a clump of trees, sweating and crying with every contraction.

His hair is a mess and his face is covered in

sweat but he tries to wash his hands in a nearby brook.

It’s the best he could do. He shifts into his dragon form and tries his best to stay quiet and unseen. It’s too dark and LWJ hasn’t seen any people. If he keeps quiet no one would find him.

Three hours of excruciating

pain later, LWJ lays a one-foot blue egg with a blue sheen and white ditsy patterns across it. He ignores his instincts screaming at him that the egg was too small. He remembered reading in the books that a healthy dragon egg was about three feet.

Despite its small size, the egg

is warm with life. LWJ holds it closer, apologizes quietly.

The parent is supposed to stay and nest for two months, keeping the egg warm in their dragon form but LWJ is not safely secluded in his cave in Cloud Recesses, surrounded by family.

With excruciating pain, he turns

back into his human form, hugging the egg close. He needs to keep moving, he needs to go somewhere safe.

In his head, there is only one safe home left.

The father of his child, Wei Wuxian. He needs to get to him.
