#SaNOtize / Enovid a failure?! The February press release on its Phase 3 trial results got my hopes up. I even bought a bottle for myself in case I got covid. Now, I’m VERY DISAPPOINTED upon reading the full paper: thelancet.com/journals/lanse… This 🧵 highlights a few of my concerns
For starters, the PCR test was done with nasal swabs, right where the spray is administered. So how do we know the spray isn’t just masking the test? what if each spray just temporarily reduces viral load in the nose rather than systemic viral load?
The treatment was for 7 days. Retesting after would’ve given insight on whether the treatment just temporarily cleared virus in the nose, or actually stamped out the infection. Very disappointing they didn’t do so on all. I can’t help but feel this may have been deliberate.🚩
The most encouraging part of the press release to me was the statement on *significance* with regard to clinical status improvement. Based on the actual results though, this statement is misleading at best. And arguably just plain false. Let’s take a closer look why…
This secondary outcome on clinical status improvement was to be measured at Day 2, 4, 8, and 19 according to both the paper and the trial registration: ctri.nic.in/Clinicaltrials…
And yet they report results instead on Day 8, 16, 18, and 20 🚩
Moreover, there was only one day with p<.05, and it was not adjusted for mulitiplicity nor a prespecified endpoint! 🚩
If there’s enough interest in this thread (e.g. likes/retweets) I will continue sharing additional concerns with this study. I’m sad to say I don’t intend to use the bottle of Enovid I bought ☹️
Iota-Carrageenan (c19ic.com) and Povidone-Iodine (c19pvpi.com) seem better options for PrEP and treatment respectively. & much cheaper / unpatentable
(links above are great repository for relevant studies but I don’t agree with their data aggregation)
